SEASON 3 EPISODE 15 - Left Behind

[Shot of pool table where Kate is crouching on the floor, still handcuffed in one of the buildings at the Barracks. She is waiting impatiently, tapping her cuffed hands on her knees. Kate sees Juliet cross in front of a window going to the door. She jumps up from in front of the pool table, grabs a pool cue and hides beside the door. Juliet opens the door and steps inside the building carrying a tray of food. Kate swings the cue at Juliet's head but Juliet ducks, dropping the tray and grabbing the cue. Juliet twists the cue over her body and the inertia of the twist flips Kate onto the floor]

Kate   [Lying on the floor, gasping for breath] Agh. Ahhh.

Juliet   I was just bringing you something to eat. Enjoy your sandwich.

[Juliet turns and walks out the door. Flashback to a country field. Kate is standing beside a broken down, beat up car while a man lifts the front of the car with a tow truck. Playing on the radio is Patsy Cline - Walking After Midnight]

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    Been on the road a while, huh?

Kate   How long's it going to take?

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    Well, your fan belt's shot. Take 2 days, maybe 3.

Kate   3 days for a fan belt?

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    [Chuckling] Welcome to Iowa.

[Kate gets into the tow truck]   

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    Name's Johnny.

Kate   I'm Lucy.

[Cut to shot of the tow truck pulling up to a country service station. A woman and 2 men are standing in front of the station. The woman turns out to be Cassidy Phillips, Sawyer's love interest and con. She is trying to sell the 2 men gold necklaces]

Cassidy   [From a distance] All 18 carat gold...[indiscernible]

Man

[From a distance] Come on, those don't look real! I'm not buying them.

Cassidy   [From a distance] What do you mean, they don't look real? I'm going out of business. You'll never find...

[Kate and Johnny get out of the tow truck and begin walking in Cassidy's direction]

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    If you need a lift into town I'm finished up here in an hour.

Man   What kind of con you pulling here? I'm calling the cops!

[Kate hears the man and hangs back, hiding her face somewhat]

Cassidy   Ok, fine. whatever. Your loss.

Johnny (Tow Truck Driver)    Hey, there a problem buddy?

Man   Yeah, yeah. There's a problem. I'm getting scammed here, that's the problem.

Cassidy   Look, I'm sorry.

Man   What do you think? I'm an idiot?

Cassidy   Hey, man. If you don't want to buy em, you don't have to buy em!

Man   Those are fake necklaces and you're a rip-off artist!

[Kate continues listening]

Cassidy   They're real.

Man   [Speaking to Johnny] Call the cops!

Cassidy   If you don't want them then I'll sell them to somebody else!

Kate   Hey, let me see those!

[Cassidy goes over to Kate with the necklaces]

Kate   My father owns a jewelry store. I think I can spot a fake.

[Kate looks at the necklaces]

Kate   How much?

Cassidy   60 bucks.

Kate   I'll take the one on the end.

[While Kate and Cassidy make the transaction, the 2 men and Johnny leave and no one calls the police]

Cassidy   Thanks.

Kate   Yeah.

[Cassidy begins walking away. Kate looks around to make sure that everyone is gone and then catches up to Cassidy, walking up beside her closely]

Kate   Can I get my money back?

[Cassidy and Kate exchange the necklace for the money with their backs to the station so no one can see. Kate then turns and starts walking back toward her car]

Cassidy   Hey!

[Cassidy approaches Kate again]

Cassidy   Why'd you help me?

Kate   Just...one girl watching another girl's back, I guess.

Cassidy   You're stranded here. And for some reason...you didn't want that guy calling the cops.

[Kate says nothing but her body language suggests that Cassidy is correct]

Cassidy   I'll give you a ride into town and you buy me a drink.

[Cassidy and Kate begin walking to Cassidy's car. Cut to shot of Kate sitting near the pool table. She is playing with backgammon chips. Locke walks in the door behind her but Kate doesn't know it's him]

Kate   What?

Locke   Kate.

[Kate turns around]

Kate   John! What are you doing? Did they capture you?

[Locke walks over to Kate]

Locke   Yes...but, only temporarily. I came to say goodbye.

Kate   Goodbye?

Locke   I'm leaving with them.

Kate   What the hell is going on! I mean, what are they doing to you?! Are you brainwashed?! Where did Jack go?

Locke   Jack didn't go anywhere Kate. He's going to have to stay behind like you.

Kate   You can't trust them. If they told you that they're going to take you home they are lying...

Locke   I don't want to go home, Kate. I want you to know I made a strong case for you. I told them you are a good person. Reliable. Smart. Honest. And then they told me who you were and what you had done. Let's just say forgiveness isn't one of their strong suits.

[Kate just stares at Locke]

Locke   Good luck.

[Locke turns and begins walking toward the door]

Kate   John, where are you going?

Locke   [Yelling toward the door] Coming out!

Kate   Hey! Just...Where is Jack and where is Sayid? Have you...have you seen Rousseau?

[Locke stops and turns to Kate and almost answers. He then turns back to the door and begins to exit]

Kate   John, please! What's happened to you?

Locke   I'm sorry Kate

[Locke exits and closes the door. Cut to shot of the beach. Sawyer is sitting in the shade of a tree facing the ocean reading Watership Down. Hurley walks up and kicks Sawyer's right foot as he passes by]

Sawyer   What the hell's wrong with you?

Hurley   Don't look at me and pretend we're not talking. I'm not supposed to be here.

[Hurley continues a little past Sawyer and begins throwing rocks into the ocean]

Sawyer   Good! Then scram!

Hurley   Dude, you need to know that there's been some chatter. After Paolo and Nikki and everything? Well, tomorrow there's going to be a vote.

Sawyer   A vote for what?

Hurley   To decide whether or not to banish you.

Sawyer   Banish me?! Where?

Hurley   Well, there's debate about that, but, the consensus was 1/2 a mile down the beach.

Sawyer   Consensus?

Hurley   I'm only saying this because there might be a way to fix it. To...like, make amends.

Sawyer   I don't do amends.

Hurley   You might want to ask yourself about all the good stuff that comes from being a part of this...society. I mean...you can't even feed yourself. You use our latrine, drink the water that Steve brings everyone morning to the trough...

Sawyer   Uhhh...

Hurley   What?

Sawyer   You know how for [Sawyer studies a watch] 3 days, 10 hours and 15 minutes I ain't allowed to use nicknames?

Hurley   Yeah?

Sawyer   Well. You, Sir Hugo, are rotund, annoying, and you're ruining my damned view! How's that for "amends"?

Hurley   You're making a big mistake, dude.

[Hurley walks away]

Sawyer   [Speaking to himself] Banish me?

[Sawyer looks down and then starts to look worried. Cut to shot of the sandwich Juliet brought for Kate. It is lying on the floor in a messy pile with flies buzzing it. Kate is lying on the floor close by. She moves closer to the sandwich and picks up a piece of bread and nibbles it. A loud noise outside startles her and she goes over to the window and looks out. She sees several of the Others with gear and packs coming out of the houses. It appears that they are preparing to leave. The Others then don gas masks. A masked man opens Kates door and throws an ALSG272 CS (Tear Gas) grenade into her room. The grenade begins emitting smoke, filling the room. Kate kicks the grenade away and covers her mouth with a piece of cloth. She tries to get out through the windows and doors but can't. The gas overcomes her and she passes out. Flashback to a bar. Some guys are playing pool and country music plays over the speakers. Kate and Cassidy are sitting at a table drinking]

Cassidy   Why don't you tell me your name?

Kate   It's Lucy.

Cassidy   And what's your real name? Next time somebody asks you...don't think about it.

Kate   I didn't think...

Cassidy   Not even for a second.

[Kate laughs]

Cassidy   So, why "Lucy"?

Kate   She's a Saint. I memorized them all in Sunday School so I figure they're probably still...rattling around my brain.

Cassidy   What makes a girl that went to Sunday School scared of the cops?

[Kate guzzles the rest of her drink and thinks for a moment]

Kate   A few months ago I killed my stepfather and I escaped from the marshal who arrested me for it.

Cassidy   Why?

Kate   Because he was a bad guy.

Cassidy   So, what the hell are you doing in Iowa?

Kate   I want to talk to my mother.

Cassidy   You're going to have a really hard time doing that. Because if you did what you just said you did...the Feds are going to be watching her 24 / 7.

Kate   I'll figure something out.

Cassidy   Oh, you will, huh?

Kate   What, you want to help me?

[Cassidy considers for a moment]

Cassidy   Absolutely.

Kate   Why?

Cassidy   I fell in love with the wrong guy. And then I gave him my life savings. He conned me, and embarrassed me. He was a bad guy. So, I'll help you get the meeting with your mom, Lucy, because one of us deserves something good.

[Cut to shot of Kate awakening. She is in lying on the ground in the jungle surrounded by thick jungle vegetation. She turns and finds that she is handcuffed to Juliet who is also lying on the ground next to her. Juliet appears to be unconscious as well. Cut to shot of the beach. Sawyer is attempting to catch a fish with a long bamboo pole while Sun and Jin cast nets into the water a short ways away. Sawyer looks at Sun smiles. Sun looks away angrily]

Sawyer   [Sighing and talking to himself] Ain't gonna get the Korean vote.

[Jin and Sun pull the nets in and they have caught a few large fish. Sawyer's pole bends and jerks. He has caught something large]

Sawyer   Oh! Oh! Shoot! What the? Gah! Come here!

[Sawyer grabs the string and begins trying to pull it in]

Sawyer   Come on, come on!

[Cut to shot of Sawyer laying a fish on a rock. He has a knife and is going to clean and gut the fish]

Sawyer   [Disgusted] Ahh...

[He flips the fish around, then back, not sure what to do]

Sawyer   Uhh, ok. Cut it...

[Sawyer slices the fish open through the belly]

Sawyer   [Even more disgusted] Aghhh!

[Sawyer begins pulling the guts out of the fish and it gets all over his hands]

Sawyer   Awww!

[Cut to shot of Sawyer walking up the beach toward Hurley who is putting some washed clothes out to dry on some tree limbs. Sawyer is wiping his nasty hands on his shirt as he walks up]

Sawyer   Ok! Let's do it!

Hurley   Do what?

Sawyer   I'm ready to do it. Make amends. Change the vote. I don't want to be banished, ok? You happy?

Hurley   Dude, you stink. What is that, fish?

Sawyer   No...

Hurley   Did you try to gut one yourself? How have you not learned that by now?! I mean, we've been here like, 3 months?

Sawyer   Can we just do this?

Hurley   Do what?

Sawyer   Make nice?!

Hurley   Apologize for calling me all those names.

Sawyer   Ahh! [Giving in] I'm really sorry I called you rotund.

Hurley   Really?

Sawyer   Ah, God. You're worse than a girl! Come on! Let's...spread the love!

[Hurley and Sawyer begin walking. Cut to shot of Kate sitting beside Juliet in the jungle. Juliet is still lying down, apparently unconscious. Kate notices a knife sticking out of Juliet's pants pocket. Kate gently slides the knife out, attempting to not awaken Juliet. She gets the knife out and opens it. Juliet then grabs Kate's wrist, not allowing her to move the knife]

Juliet   What the hell am I doing here?

Kate   Why don't you tell me?

Juliet   Well I don't know either so...why don't you let go of my wrist?!

[Juliet looks at Kate and then slowly releases her grasp around Kate's wrist. Kate flips the knife blade down, pointing at Juliet as if she is going to stab her. Instead, Kate backs away and starts attempting to pick the lock on the handcuffs with the knife]

Kate   So what the hell happened?

[Juliet sits up]

Juliet   I was making a cup of tea. A canister came in through the window.

Kate   So what did you do to piss them off?

[Kate keeps working on the handcuffs with the knife]

Juliet   You're wasting your time. The knife is too big. You need something smaller, a safety pin or a...

Kate   We're going back.

Juliet   What?! They did this to us! Why would we go back?

Kate   You say "they" like you didn't lock me in a cage and watch me break rocks all day! We're going back to your village because my friends were probably gassed just like us. Your people are gone anyway. I saw them all pack up and leave.

Juliet   What?

Kate   Locke came in to me to say goodbye. They were taking off, going somewhere else.

Juliet   Going? Going where?

Kate   He didn't...exactly...tell me. Welcome to the wonderful world of not knowing what the hell is going on.

[Flashback to a woman pulling a suitcase down the street toward a small apartment house. The woman looks very much like Kate from the back. Her hair and a baseball cap obscure her face. The woman walks up the steps to a door marked "F" and knocks. Kate's mother Diane opens the door]

Edward   [Yelling from inside Diane's house] Go go go!

[Edward comes out of the house and points a gun at the woman that looks like Kate]

Edward   On the ground!

[Two cars slide to a stop on the road outside the apartment house]

Edward   Get down! On the ground!

[Two men come outside Diane's door behind Edward. Their jackets are marked US MARSHAL]

Edward   Let me see those hands!

Man 1   Get back inside the house!

Man 2   Got it! Got it!

Edward   Let me see those hands!

[The woman lays face down on the ground. Her hair still covers her face. Other agents are now on the scene controlling the crowd and a car police radio can be heard]

Edward   Long time no see, Austen.

[Edward rolls the woman over and pulls off her sunglasses. It is Cassidy dressed in a wig and clothes that look like Kate's]

Edward   Who the hell are you?!

Cassidy   [Nodding at the suitcase] I'm just selling Bibles!

[Edward stares at Cassidy dumbfounded and opens the case. Inside are several bibles. Edward looks around the area. Cut to a long distance shot of the scene through binoculars. The scene shows the woman on the ground, Edward and several marshals standing around and the two cars. The scene shifts and we see Kate in a car. She lowers the binoculars. She realizes that her mother is helping the agents try to capture her. Cut to someone knocking on a hotel door. Kate opens it and Cassidy steps inside]

Kate   Hi.

[She removes her wig]

Cassidy   They questioned me for half an hour. They confiscated my case...he was asking me about selling Bibles...oh it's a good thing I know how to lie.

Kate   Yeah, now we know what we're up against, right?

Cassidy

[Agitated] Yeah, now we know that there were 6 guys waiting to take you down, Lucy.

Kate   Yeah, it's okay. I'll figure it out.

Cassidy   Figure it out? That marshal...I don't know what you did to him, but if he ever gets his hands on you it is gonna be you or him.

Kate   Look, if you've changed your mind...if you don't want to help me...I get it.

Cassidy   No, I do want to help you, but if I'm lying to federal agents, Lucy, so that you can have a chat with your Mom...then I at least need to know that there's a pretty good reason.

Kate   He uh...used to get drunk, and beat up my Mom. So, I blew up his house. I...made it look like an accident. A gas leak. Took out an insurance policy on the house...for her. Set her up for life. And then she gave me up. Chose him over me. So, the reason I need to talk to her is...someone I love...someone who's supposed to care about me...betrayed me...and I want to know why.

Cassidy   Well, then let's go find out.

[Shot of Kate looking at the ground in the jungle]

Juliet   What are you doing?

Kate   Whoever dragged us out here left a trail. It'll lead us back to where we came from.

Kate   Let's go.

[She stands, turns to walk, and is jerked to a stop by Juliet who does not move]

Juliet   It's gonna rain. Don't you think we should wait til morning.

Kate   No.

[She turns and jerks Juliet along. The scene shifts to the two walking in the jungle at night]

Kate   Why?

Juliet   Why what?

Kate   Why would they handcuff you to me and then drag us all the way out into the jungle.

Juliet   Ben has a thing for mind games.

Kate   That why he left you behind?

Juliet   Do we really have to talk?

Kate   Nope.

[Thunder booms and rain begins pouring. They are soaking wet in seconds]

Kate   Come on. If the trail gets wet I'll lose it.

Juliet   I hope you're not dragging me all the way back there for him.

Kate   Excuse me?

Juliet   I hope you're not going back for Jack...because I was standing right there when he told you not to come back. And now that you ruined his chance to get off the island...

[Kate punches Juliet in the face knocking Juliet to the ground and Juliet drags Kate down with her. Kate punches her again. Kate then stands and jerks Juliet up. Juliet stands and leans back using her feet to flip Kate over her and they both land on the ground again. Kate delivers a punch to Juliet's face which stuns her. Kate then stands and wraps Juliet's arm around her back]

Kate   Are you done?! I said are you done?!

[Kate twists her arm upward and the sound of bones crunching loudly can be heard]

Juliet   Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ahh! Uhhahhhaahaa...

[Juliet rolls over crying and Kate looks worried]

Kate   I didn't...I'm sorry I...I didn't mean to...

[Just then the roar of the Island Monster can be heard.]

Juliet   What the hell is that?!

Kate   Get up!

Juliet   You dislocated my shoulder.

Kate   Get! Up! Come on!

[Kate lifts Juliet up and they begin to run. After they run a short distance, Kate notices a thicket of trees]

Kate   Quick, in here. Come on. Get in. Okay. Okay, get down. Get down.

[They squat down behind the trees]

Juliet   What the hell...is...

[Kate puts her hand over Juliet's mouth]

Kate   Shhhhh.

[The sound of the Island Monster roaring can be heard as Kate and Juliet look wildly into the jungle. The sound of crunching trees can be heard as the monster approaches where they are hiding. The view from the Island Monsters perspective is shown as trees part and it comes up to where Kate and Juliet are crouching. It appears that the monster reads or scans Juliet as she stares out at it and four flashes are seen. It then leaves]

Juliet   [Whispering] Are we safe?

Kate   [Whispering] You tell me.

[The scene shifts to nightfall at the beach camp where Claire is taking care of Aaron in his crib. In the distance Sawyer and Hurley look on]

Sawyer   I ain't kissing no damn baby.

Hurley   Claire's like really influential. If she votes for you to stay, you're home free, dude.

Sawyer   Well, why wouldn't she vote for me? It's not like I've ever done anything bad to her.

Hurley   Nah, but you never did anything good for her either. And have you ever even asked how Aaron is?

Sawyer   Well, I know how he is, he...cries loud and he smells.

Hurley   You see, that's what I'm talking about. You're sarcastic. People don't like that.

Sawyer   Alright. So I go over...do what?

Hurley   Mom's love it when you show an interest in their babies. So go over there and say something nice. Call her Claire, and give her this.

[Hurley hands Sawyer a blanket]

Hurley   I know you can do it, dude.

[Hurley pats him on the shoulder and Sawyer walks over to Claire and Aaron]

Sawyer   Hey, Claire

Claire   Hey.

Sawyer   [To Aaron] Hey there...little baby.

[Aaron begins to cry]

Sawyer   Aaron.

[Claire smiles at Sawyer's discomfort as Aaron, but then finally stops]

Claire   Is uh...is there anything I can do for you?

Sawyer   No. I just came by to...say your baby's...

[Aaron cries out again]

Sawyer   He's not as wrinkly as he was a couple of weeks ago.

Claire   [Somewhat taken aback, then laughing] Yeah, I guess he's not. Thanks.

Sawyer   Oh and uh...this is for you.

[Sawyer hands Claire the blanket]

Claire   Thank you.

Sawyer   I don't like...blankets. Well, goodnight.

Claire   Goodnight.

[Sawyer walks away and looks to Hurley who gives him a thumbs up. The scene shifts to Kate and Juliet crouching in the jungle]

Juliet   [Whispering] Do you think it's gone? Are we safe?

Kate   [Whispering] Are you serious? You've never seen that?

Juliet   If you don't believe me you can always pull my other shoulder out of its socket.

Kate   Ohhh. I was...I wasn't trying to...

Juliet   Don't flatter yourself. This is the 4th time it's been dislocated.

[Juliet winces and moans as she assesses the damage to her shoulder]

Juliet   Give me your hand.

Kate   Why?

Juliet   Cause I want you to pop it back in...

Kate    No. I'm not gonna...

Juliet   You're gonna. Right now it feels like there's broken glass under my skin and if it weren't for you...I would be on my way home right now...

Kate   Jack told me not to come back to protect him because he didn't want me to get hurt.

Juliet   Is that what you think?

Kate   [Agitated] Yeah, that's what I think.

Juliet   We have cameras on the cages, Kate. All of them. He saw you. You and Sawyer. The reason Jack told you not to come back, wasn't because he didn't want you to get hurt. It was because you broke his heart.

[Kate looks guilty and hurt]

Juliet   So, grab my wrist, push up, and twist.

[Kate stares at Juliet and then suddenly grabs her wrist and twists. Juliet's yell of pain echoes through the jungle. The scene then shifts to Sawyer and Desmond who are crouched behind some bushes with guns, apparently hunting in the jungle]

Sawyer   Why do we got to be out here so damn early?

Desmond   You asked me to help you catch a boar. Well, this is when they break cover to eat.

Sawyer   Looks like they picked today to sleep in.

Desmond   So what's your angle, brother?

Sawyer   My angle?

Desmond   Well you...haven't spoke 3 words to me and...suddenly you want to be my hunting partner.

Sawyer   My angle is I got hearts and minds to change. And politics is all about bribes. Since money don't mean squat on this island, I gotta give the people something they like. And people like meat...

Desmond   Shh.

[Desmond aims his rifle and sites on a boar. He fires and the boar can be heard squealing and dropping to the ground. The scene shifts to Kate startling awake. Juliet then awakens with a soft moan]

Kate   How's your shoulder.

Juliet   Awesome.

Kate   Then let's get going.

[They stand and the scene shifts to a diner where Diane is working. She delivers a bowl of soup to a table and Cassidy is sitting there]

Cassidy   Thank you.

Diane   You're welcome sweetheart.

[Diane walks away and Cassidy slides the bowl close to the edge of the table. When Diane walks back by, Cassidy knocks the bowl on her which makes a mess of her shirt and apron]

Cassidy   Oh my God! I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry...

Diane   No worries.

Cassidy   I'm such an idiot.

Diane   It happens all the time sweetheart. [To another waitress who comes over to help] Oh, thank you.

[The scene shifts to Diane attempting to wash the stain out of her cloths in the bathroom. Kate then comes out from behind a stall]

Kate   Hi Mom.

Diane   What are you doing here, Katherine?

Kate   You look good.

Diane   [Whispering] I asked you what you are doing here?

Kate   I wanna know why you told them what I did to Wayne?

Diane   I thought maybe you came because you wanted to say you were sorry.

Kate   [Agitated] I'm not sorry. He hit you. He treated you like a dog and...

Diane   You can't help who you love, Katherine. And for good or bad, I loved him. And you burnt him alive. You turned on the gas and you lit a match. You murdered him in cold blood.

Kate   I did it for you.

Diane   No. What you did, you did for yourself. I have to go back to work. Because you are my daughter, I'm not going to tell the 2 men sitting at the table who have been following me for the last month that you are here...but I swear to God Katie, if I ever see you again...the first thing I will do is yell for help. [Crying] Bye.

Kate   [Crying] Ma...

[Diane leaves the bathroom and the scene shifts to Kate and Juliet walking in the jungle]

Kate   Did he say that to you?

Juliet   Sorry?

Kate   That I broke his heart.

Juliet   He didn't have to.

Kate   You don't know anything about him.

Juliet   I know where he was born. I know what his parents did for a living. I know that he was married...and who he was married to. I know why he got a divorce. I know how his father died. I know his height, his weight, his birthday, and his blood type. What do you know about him, Kate?

[Kate has no answer and waits for period of silence]

Kate   Let's go.

[As they resume walking the sound of the Island Monster can be heard]

Kate   Run. Run. Run!

[They begin running. The Island Monster pursues and at one point they both trip and fall into a pit of mud]

Kate   Get up! Get up! Run, run! Come on.

[They run to the edge of the perimeter of the sonic fence and Juliet continues to pull Kate forward]

Kate   Stop. Wait.

Juliet   What are you doing?

Kate   I know what happens when you step through those things...

Juliet   No. They are off, Kate!

Kate   We will go along side them

Juliet   We don't need to. We can go around. They're off!

[They struggle with Kate pulling away from the fence and Juliet pulling towards it]

Juliet   Damn it!

[In desperation Juliet removes a key from her pocket, unlocks the handcuffs, and runs to the fence as Kate looks on in shock. On the side of one of the pillars is a keypad. Juliet appears to enter 1-6-2-3 which opens the box]

Juliet   You're gonna want to be over here. Kate come on!

[The Island Monster draws closer and Kate steps to the other side of the fence. Juliet turns a dial and the fence hums to life. Trees start uprooting and the Island Monster approaches the fence. It attempts to move through, but the sonic pulse of the fence stops it, prohibiting it from passing through. The image is similar to someone trying to separate themselves from an electric shock. When it releases itself, the Island Monster turns and rapidly moves back into the jungle. Kate walks up to Juliet and shoves her from the back. When Juliet looks at Kate, Kate gives her a look that could kill]

Juliet   Alright. We don't know what it is, but we know that it doesn't like our fences.

Kate   You had a key?

Juliet   They left me behind too. They gassed me. I know that you don't care, but the people I spent the last 3 years of my life with, they just left me. I thought that maybe...maybe if I could make you think we were in it together...maybe I wouldn't get left behind again.

[Kate steps forward and takes the key from Juliet. She removes her half of the handcuffs and throws them both to the jungle while heading back to the Barracks. The scene shifts to Sawyer barbequing a huge hog over a makeshift pit]

Sawyer    Oh ha haaaa. Alright.

[He walks by people who are talking]

Man   Alright man.

[He stops where Charlie is eating a plate of food]

Charlie   Mmm. Oh, it's delicious.

Sawyer   Just a little Dharma A-1 and paprika.

[Charlie grabs some sauce and pours it over his food]

Sawyer   I hope you'll remember this little barbeque at your meeting later.

Charlie   Oh, what meeting?

Sawyer    Hurley told me about the vote.

Charlie   Vote? Since when did anyone around here vote?

[A sudden realization dawns on Sawyer and the scene shifts to Sawyer confronting Hurley who is eating a plate of food himself]

Sawyer   Son of a bitch. There wasn't ever gonna be no vote.

Hurley   But...wasn't it nice...being nice?

Sawyer   You tricked me into being descent? That's gotta be the lamest cons in the history of cons.

Hurley   It wasn't a con, dude. If you're gonna be our temporary leader, you need to do some damage control.

Sawyer   Leader? What the hell are you smoking?

Hurley   Jack's gone...Locke's gone...Kate and Sayid...[Shrugs] You're all we got. Paulo and Nikki died, we all looked to you. Then again you totally tried to steal their diamonds, but we wanted to look to you. Look around. You made everyone happy. Just for today, they can eat boar, laugh, and forget that they're totally screwed. And you did that for them, dude. You.

Sawyer   What if I don't want to be the leader?

Hurley   You know, I don't think Jack wanted it either. Sucks for you, dude.

[The scene shifts to a montage of everyone enjoying the cook out. Sawyer hands two plates to Hurley who carries one to Desmond. Sawyer takes a plate to Claire and holds the baby for her while she eats. Sun and Jin look on. Everyone seems happy, including Sawyer. Sawyer then looks to Sun who does not return his smile, but gives him a dirty look. The scene then shifts to Kate and Juliet exiting the jungle and seeing a deserted Barracks]

Juliet   Sayid's in one of those backyards down there. I'll go get him. You should get Jack.

[The scene shifts to Kate walking into Jack's place and finding it trashed and him unconscious on the floor. She runs to him]

Kate   Jack. Jack. Hey, Jack, wake up it's me, Kate...

[He is startled a wake and throws her into the wall]

Jack   What happened?

Kate   They all left.

Jack   Left?

[Jack struggles to sit up]

Jack   What?

Kate   Because of me. I'm so sorry. I should've have listened to you. I never...I wanted to come back to help you...but you didn't need me to. And now because of me, you can't go. [Crying] I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.

Jack   They just...left?

[Kate nods her head yes]

Jack   Even...even Juliet?

Kate   [Looking hurt] No, they left her too.

Jack   Why?

Kate   You know her better than I do. Now what?

Jack   Now...now we go back.

[They get up and Kate helps steady Jack. They put their arms around each other and she helps him out the door. The scene shifts to a flashback of Kate and Cassidy in her car. Cassidy pulls off the road and stops. Kate looks at her own car at the garage]

Kate   Thanks for everything, Cassidy?

Cassidy   You got it.

Kate   So, this guy who ripped you off...you gonna give me his name? Tell me where I can find him? You almost got arrested for me, Cassidy. I want to help you.

Cassidy   I'm pregnant.

Kate   [Whispering] Oh.

Cassidy   It's his. The baby's his. [Crying] And I still love him.

Kate   So call the cops...have him locked up.

Cassidy   Will you ever forgive your Mom for calling the cops?

Kate   No. No I won't.

Cassidy   Thanks, Lucy.

Kate   My name's Kate.

[She leaves the car and the scene shifts back to the Barracks where Kate and Jack exit his house and he walks up to Juliet]

Jack   Hey.

Juliet   Hey.

Jack   You okay?

Juliet   Yeah. You?

Jack   Yeah.

[Sayid walks up interrupting them]

Sayid   Jack?

Jack   Sayid.

Sayid   I checked all the houses. Everyone's gone. No weapons...no trail...

[Kate walks up to the group]

Kate   [Speaking softly to Sayid] Hey.

Sayid   It's like 50 people disappeared into thin air.

Jack   We should take what we can find and...head out while we still got light.

[Jack and Juliet turn and start walking]

Sayid   She is not coming with us.

Jack   Yes she is.

Sayid   Why?

Jack   Because they left her behind too.

[Sayid says nothing. Jack and Juliet turn and start walking away. Kate and Sayid look at each other and then they follow]
