The severely wounded Marshal asks Kate to put him out of his misery. She can't bring herself to do it, but she returns the Marshal's gun to Sawyer, who shoots the Marshal in the chest in a failed attempt to euthanize him with the last bullet. Jack is all but forced to complete the euthanization. He smothers the Marshal to death.

Kate turns up in Australia as a fugitive. Using the name Annie and claiming to be Canadian, she arrives at the farm of Ray Mullen. Ray, in exchange for help around his farm, offers her some money and a place to stay. Almost 3 months later, in the middle of the night, Kate attempts to sneak out of the house. Ray catches her and insists he drive her to the train station the next morning.
While they are on their way to the train station, their truck is followed by a US Marshal. Ray saw Kate's picture on a wanted poster at the post office and turned her in for the cash reward of $23,000 to help with a hefty mortgage his deceased wife left him with. Kate grabs the wheel abruptly, rolling the truck. Instead of running away as soon as she escapes the truck, she pulls Ray away from the wreck, giving the Marshal time to capture her.
