Sayid's flashback shows us that he was in the Republican Guard in Iraq. He is given a promotion from communications officer to the interrogation division. He is pleased with the news. He then sees Nadia being led into the camp. He is the one who interrogates Nadia. Two weeks later, he is told that if she does not talk, he will have to kill her. He helps her escape by shooting an officer and then shooting himself in the leg to make it look like she escaped without his help. He gives her the gun and tells her about a truck waiting outside, and sends her on her way

Sayid has banished himself for torturing Sawyer. While exploring, he is snared in one of Danielle's traps and as it swings him about, he is gored on a sharpened stick in the thigh. Danielle cuts him down and brings him to her shelter. She ties him to a bare coiled mattress frame, and she attaches a battery to the bed frame and zaps Sayid several times. Then she shoots him up with a sedative so she can move him to a chair to work on her broken music box.
