While Hurley is giving his "winning" interview to some news crews, his grandfather suddenly drops dead.

When Hurley returned to the mental hospital to discover the origin of "the numbers," the patient, Leonard, revealed that he heard about them from Sam Toomey, a naval officer who heard the numbers while monitoring radio signals. Hurley tracked down the man's home in the outback of Australia, only to find out from his widow that he had also thought the numbers were cursed. After they were in a car accident that caused her to lose a leg, Sam killed himself to finally escape the numbers.
