Jin is starting to learn English and when he welcomes Sawyer back using his new skill Sawyer responds with "Well, well, look who's hooked on phonics". Hooked on Phonics was a widely seen television ad for its product to help kids learn to read.
Developed in the late 1980s and first marketed widely in the 1990s, it used a particular instructional design to teach letter-sound correlations (phonics) as part of children's literacy. The program has since expanded to encompass a wide variety of media, including computer games, music, and flash cards in addition to books in its materials, as well as to include other subject areas. The target audience for this brand is primarily individuals and home school parents,
as exemplified by the memorable 1-800-ABCDEFG® phone number, prominently featured in radio advertisements, or by the letters in the phone number lighting up bouncing ball-style on-screen during the television ad.
Jiminy Cricket - Disney Cartoon Character
Sawyer calls Charlie 'jiminy cricket', a character seen on the Walt Disney show and featured in the animated Disney movie Pinnochio.
Jiminy Cricket is a fictional character who first appeared in the 1940 Walt Disney animated film Pinocchio. He was appointed by the Blue Fairy to serve as the official conscience for Pinocchio. He is also a comical and wise partner who accompanies Pinocchio on his adventures. (Hmm, does that make Hurley Pinocchio?) Also interesting to note, Jiminy is noted for singing the song "When You Wish Upon a Star", voiced by Cliff Edwards. The lyrics really blend in with the theme of this episode:
When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those to love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

After Pinocchio, Jiminy appeared in Fun and Fancy Free as the host of the cartoon segments. He also hosted many Disney television specials. In a recurring segment of the children's television series Mickey Mouse Club, he taught a generation how to spell e-n-c-y-c-l-o-p-e-d-i-a.
Of course, in this generation, it's called ....where this information was found.
Little House on the Prairie
Sawyer tells Kate he was sick with mono for two months as a kid and was stuck watching TV that only had one channel in which one program he watched was Little House on the Prairie.
A television series based on the Little House On The Prairie aired on the NBC network from 1974 to 1983. The show was a loose adaptation of the Little House on the Prairie books. Michael Landon starred as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle played Caroline Ingalls, Melissa Gilbert played Laura Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson played Mary Ingalls, and the twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush
(credited as Lindsay Sidney Greenbush) played Carrie Ingalls. Some
characters were added in the show, such as Albert, played by Matthew Laborteaux,
an orphan the family adopted. Although it deviated from the original
books in some respects, the television series, which was set in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, was one of the few long-running successful dramatic family shows (and still it is in syndication).
Masters of the Universe - He-Man
Poor Roger the Work Man. Not only does Sawyer clunk him in the head (which was knocked off by Jin and Hurley) with his beer can, but he also dubbed him Skeletor, a villanous character in the cartoon He-Man from the Masters of the Universe series.
Skeletor is a fictional character in the toy, cartoon and comic book series Masters of the Universe ("MOTU"), where he is the arch-enemy of He-Man, and the main antagonist of MOTU. He is the greatest threat to present day Eternia. He seeks to conquer Castle Grayskull
so he can learn all of Eternia's ancient secrets which would make him
unstoppable, and which would enable him to conquer and rule all of
Eternia. In the minicomic and Filmation series, Skeletor's origin is unknown, but is implied that he was once Keldor, the brother of King Randor, though in the Mike Young Productions series, he is directly portrayed as such.
Sesame Street
Sawyer calls Hurley 'snuffy', a character on the children's television show Sesame Street.
Aloysius Snuffleupagus, more commonly known as Mr. Snuffleupagus or Snuffy, is one of the Muppet characters on the long-running educational television program for young children, Sesame Street. He resembles a woolly mammoth, without tusks or (visible) ears, and he is a friend of Big Bird. He attends Snufflegarten and has a baby sister named Alice.
For many years, Big Bird was the only character on the show who saw
him (he only came along when Big Bird was alone). The main adult
characters teased Big Bird when he said he had seen the Snuffleupagus,
because they didn't believe there was such an animal, often despite
evidence to the contrary (such as an oversized teddy bear that Snuffy
had left behind or segments in which Snuffy interacted with other
characters, such as a street scene where Snuffy was seen playing London
Bridge with some of the neighborhood kids). This was modeled in part on
the imaginary friends some young children have.
Hmmm...imaginary friend huh? Dave? Dave?
