So what have the lostaways been eating? A tropical island has lots of fruit, but they've also made do with the wildlife and whatever else they can find. See how they break bread in our list of their tropical diet. Below is a list of the fruit that they have managed to find.
If you see something that we missed be sure to let us know by posting in the suggestion / correction forum for Food
Coconuts
The origin of this plant are the subject of debate with some
authorities claiming it is native to Southeast Asia, while others claim
its origin is in northwestern South America. The coconut has spread
across much of the tropics, probably aided in many cases by sea-faring
peoples. The fruit is light and buoyant and presumably spread
significant distances by marine currents.
Bananas Domestication of bananas took place in South East Asia. Many
species of wild bananas still occur in New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia
and the Philippines.
Papayas
Originally from southern Mexico, Central America and northern South
America, the papaya is now cultivated in most tropical countries.
Guava
Native to the Caribbean, Central America and northern South
America. Guavas are cultivated in many tropical countries. In several
tropical regions, including Hawaii, some species have become invasive
weed shrubs.
Passion Fruit
Native to tropical and sub-tropical America. Also found in the
Caribbean, Brazil, south Florida, Hawaii (where it is called lilikoi),
Australia (where it is always spelled passionfruit) and South Africa.
Mangos Native to India and Indo-China. Also found in southern Asia, North,
South and Central America, the Caribbean, south and central Africa and
Australia. (aka Mandangoes!)
Starfruit - "Carambola"
Native to Sri Lanka. Also found in Southeast Asia, Brazil, Ghana and Guyana.
