Christian was drinking when he delivered is "Don't be a hero" speech to young Jack. Interesting note: the sound of ice tinkling in a glass is used throughout the episode every time Jack sees Christian on the island.

 

Jack goes to Sydney to bring his father home and finds liquor bottles in the drawer of his hotel room.

We know that Christian died in an alcohol related incident in Sydney, and that he was drunk and disorderly at the hotel bar before he disappeared.
