Mistake/Accident - Season 1

PILOT 1
  • Jack tells Kate how he handles fear:
KATE: You don't seem afraid at all. I don't understand that.

JACK: Well, fear's sort of an odd thing. When I was in residency my first solo procedure was a spinal surgery on a 16 year old kid, a girl. And at the end, after 13 hours, I was closing her up and I, I accidentally ripped her dural sac, shredded the base of the spine where all the nerves come together, membrane as thin as tissue. And so it ripped open and the nerves just spilled out of her like angel hair pasta, spinal fluid flowing out of her and I: and the terror was just so crazy. So real. And I knew I had to deal with it. (He's crying). So I just made a choice. I'd let the fear in, let it take over, let it do its thing, but only for 5 seconds, that's all I was going to give it. So I started to count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Then it was gone. I went back to work, sewed her up and she was fine.

THE MOTH
  • Charlie alerts Locke to the cave-in:
LOCKE: Something wrong, Charlie?

CHARLIE: Yeah, Jack. He's a -- there's been an accident at the caves. Jack's trapped in a cave-in.

LOCKE: Is anyone trying to get him out?

CHARLIE: Yeah, there's a bunch of people of there now.

SOLITARY
  • Kate is concerned for Sayid, who has left the beach:
KATE: It's been two days since Sayid took off on his own. I keep looking up, thinking I'm going to see him coming back.

JACK: He'll come back when he's found what he's looking for -- the French transmission.

KATE: He wasn't looking for anything. He left because of what happened -- for what he did.

JACK: It was an accident.

KATE: Well, accidents happen when you torture people, Jack.

JACK: Sayid's a trained soldier, Kate. He can take care of himself.

ALL THE BEST COWBOYS HAVE DADDY ISSUES
  • Jack confronts his father about the woman who died under Christian's care:
JACK: You cut her hepatic artery.

DR. SHEPHARD: She was in a car crash, Jack. Her insides were a mess.

JACK: You made a mistake.

DR. SHEPHARD: They called me. I. . .

JACK: I don't care whether they called you. You made a mistake.
  • Christian asks Jack to sign off on his version of events in the operating room:
CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: Oh, thanks for coming in Jack. Have a seat. [he turns a document around for Jack to see]

JACK: What does it say?

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: The truth, that a patient was brought to the ER following a car accident, rushed into surgery with massive internal bleeding -- you joined me, and in spite of our most heroic efforts, the patient succumbed to her injuries.

JACK: Looks like you fixed everything but the patient. You had no business being in O.R.

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: Do you really think I would have walked in there if I couldn't handle it?

JACK: You've done it before.

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: That's right, I have, because I am perfectly capable of making those. . .

JACK: How can you say that after what happened yesterday?

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: The problem is not that. . .

JACK: You were impaired.

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: I know my limits.

JACK: I won't sign this.

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: You're a part of the team, Jack. I'm not the only one on the hook for this. You called me off. You were the surgeon of record when she died. Accidents happen in surgeries all the time, Jack. That's the truth and you know it. But if you contradict this report, if you mention alcohol, well that's the only fact that's going to matter. They'll strip me of my license.

JACK: Yes, they will.

WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE
  • Sayid asks Shannon to help him translate Danielle's papers:
SAYID: You've been telling me what sounds very much like nonsense for the past hour and now it seems to me. . .

SHANNON: Okay, a) I told you that my French sucks, and b) this isn't my nonsense, okay? Did you ever think that after 16 years on mystery frickin' island your friend might not be quite adjusted?

SAYID [picking up the papers]: This was a mistake.

SHANNON: Yeah, haven't you heard? I'm completely useless.

SPECIAL
  • Susan visits Michael in the hospital:
SUSAN [off camera at first]: Hello, Michael.

MICHAEL: Susan.

SUSAN: I finally called Andy when I hadn't heard from you in over two months. I had to hear about your accident from him. You should have called me.

HOMECOMING
  • Kate and Hurley discuss Sceve's gruesome death:
HURLEY: I thought those guys had a full on perimeter set up.

KATE: Locke said it didn't matter -- he came in from the water.

HURLEY: You sure it wasn't an accident? I mean, maybe the guy just drowned or something.

KATE: His neck was broken, his arms, all the bones in his fingers.

HURLEY: Yeah, okay. Got it.
  • Lucy Heatherton confronts Charlie about his drug use and stealing from her father:
CHARLIE: Lucy. I'm sorry. I've been having some problems. If I could just explain.

LUCY: Leave, Charlie.

CHARLIE: Lucy, I made a mistake.

LUCY: You made a mistake? My father's sales manager comes here to my house to return a cigarette case that the EMT pulled from your suit pocket at the bloody hospital, and it still smells of your sick.

OUTLAWS
  • Hibbs comes to Sawyer's hotel room to deliver information on the "real" Sawyer:
HIBBS: I've got to hand it to you, Sawbucks. How you find women that beautiful to work your grift. . .

[Sawyer grabs Hibbs and pins him against a wall.]

SAWYER: Now, if I'm not mistaken, I'm fairly certain I said I'd kill you if I ever saw you again.

  • Locke tells Kate the story about his sister:
LOCKE [making coffee]: My sister, Jeanie, died when I was a boy. Fell off the monkey bars and broke her neck. And my mother, well, my foster mother, she blamed herself, of course -- thought she wasn't watching close enough. So, she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. The neighbors started talking, afraid she might do something to herself, I guess. [Sipping coffee] Oh, that's good. Anyway, about 6 months after Jeanie's funeral this golden retriever comes padding up our driveway, walks right into our house, sits down on the floor, and looks right at my mother, there on the couch. And my mother looks back at the dog. After about a minute of this, of them both staring at each other like that, my mother burst into tears. Beautiful dog, no tags, no collar, healthy, and sweet. The dog slept in Jeanie's old room, on Jeanie's old bed and stayed with us until my mother passed 5 years later. Then, disappeared back to wherever it was she came from in the first place.

KATE: So, you're saying the dog was your sister?

LOCKE: Well, that would be silly. But my mother thought it was, thought that Jeanie had come back to tell her the accident wasn't her fault, let her off the hook.

DEUS EX MACHINA
  • Boone loses faith in Locke's hatch project:
BOONE: It's useless. You can't open that thing up. You say you can but you can't.

LOCKE: No, don't tell me what I can't do.

BOONE: Don't you get it? It's a dead end. You're not getting in.

LOCKE: That's impossible. We didn't find this by accident. We're supposed to...

BOONE: Oh, we're supposed to. We're supposed to find this, right? We're supposed to open it, right? Then tell me something, John, if we're supposed to open it, then why the hell haven't we opened it yet?

  • Locke brings Boone back to the caves after his fall:
BOONE: It's useless. You can't open that thing up. You say you can but you can't.

LOCKE: No, don't tell me what I can't do.

BOONE: Don't you get it? It's a dead end. You're not getting in.

LOCKE: That's impossible. We didn't find this by accident. We're supposed to...

BOONE: Oh, we're supposed to. We're supposed to find this, right? We're supposed to open it, right? Then tell me something, John, if we're supposed to open it, then why the hell haven't we opened it yet?

DO NO HARM
  • Jack and Sarah's wedding:
SARAH: In sickness and in health, in good times and bad, I risk it all because I love you.

MINISTER: Thank you, Sarah. Jack has also prepared his vows. Jack, if you would, please. Jack?

JACK: I didn't write any vows. I've been trying to for a month, but I couldn't. So I started to wonder why that was. And as time went on it only got worse -- because I'm, because I'm not good at letting go. Or maybe I'm afraid of what'll happen if I fail. But I know one thing. I would've never been able to write anything as beautiful as what you just said. And last night, Sarah, when you were talking about the accident -- you got it all wrong. I didn't fix you. You fixed me. I love you, Sarah, and I always will.

THE GREATER GOOD
  • Sayid confronts Locke about the circumstances of Boone's accident.
SAYID: Why did you lie?

LOCKE: I made a mistake.
  • Sayid tries to comfort Shannon:
SAYID: How are you? Do you want to take a walk?

SHANNON: Sure.

SAYID: I spoke to Locke.

SHANNON: What did he say?

SAYID: He took me to the plane. I believe what happened was an accident.

SHANNON: Then why did he lie?

SAYID: I have no idea. But I don't believe he meant to harm Boone.
  • Shannon has a gun on Locke:
SHANNON: Stay back. What did you do to him?

LOCKE: I told you it was an accident.

JACK: Shannon.

SHANNON: Jack, you told me he was a liar.

  • Sayid has prevented Shannon from killing Locke:
KATE She just needs time. She's been through a lot.

SAYID: Time won't make a difference. Perhaps I made a mistake.

KATE: You couldn't let her kill Locke. You had no choice.

SAYID: There's always a choice.

BORN TO RUN
  • Locke is tending to his leg wound:
WALT: What happened?

LOCKE: I had a little accident.

WALT: Does it hurt?

LOCKE: Yep. Something you want to tell me, Walt?

EXODUS 1
  • Locke, Jack, Sayid, Hurley and Danielle are at the hatch, with the intention of hiding people inside it:
SAYID: This is a mistake. We don't know anything about these others. We're reacting with no information, no intelligence. This hatch might even be theirs. Black smoke on the horizon doesn't mean they're. . .

DANIELLE: It means they're coming.

  • Officer Calderwood has arrested Sawyer in Australia:
CALDERWOOD: You remember me? 3 nights ago? You were hauled in here thrashing and fighting. As you were being escorted by you kicked my desk. And you broke my mug.

SAWYER: Nice kids.

CALDERWOOD: Sadly for you, breaking my mug was not the most significant mistake you made that evening.

    EXODUS 2
  • Hurley is blaming himself for Artz's death:
HURLEY: He just -- exploded in front of us. He was just trying to help. This is because I came.

KATE: What?

HURLEY: I'm kind of bad luck.

KATE: Hey, it was an accident.

HURLEY: An accident, yeah.

EXODUS 3
  • Locke and Jack discuss their destiny on the island:
LOCKE: I believe that I was being tested.

JACK: Tested?

LOCKE: Yeah, tested.

JACK: I think...

LOCKE: That's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack -- because you're a man of science.

JACK: Yeah, and what does that make you?

LOCKE: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.

JACK: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?

LOCKE: The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you, too, Jack. It's destiny.
