Hope - Season 1

PILOT 2
  • Sayid explains how the radio works:
KATE: Why are you trying to pick up a signal, aren't we trying to send one?

SAYID: Yes, but what you want to see here is little bars. Bars would show the radio's getting reception.

KATE: We need the bars?

SAYID: We could broadcast blind, hope that someone, maybe a ship somewhere picks up our distress call. But that would be a waste of the battery. It might not last for long. There is one thing we could try.

KATE: What?

SAYID: Seeing if we could get a signal from high ground.

TABULA RASA
  • Sayid tells Kate, Sawyer, Charlie, Shannon and Boone that what they heard on the French transmission is best kept a secret for now:
SAYID: No one's going to tell them anything. To relay what we heard without fully understanding it will cause a panic. If we tell them what we know we take away their hope. And hope is a very dangerous thing to lose.

KATE: So we lie.

  • Ray Mullen catches Kate trying to sneak out in the middle of the night:
RAY: Weren't you going to say goodbye?

KATE: Wrote you a note.

RAY: You've been here almost 3 months, Annie. And every time I ask you about yourself, you get that look in your eye. Yeah, that one. So, I mind my own business. I figured maybe you got off on the wrong side of a bad relationship. Maybe you ran. I always knew you'd leave here someday. I guess I hoped it wouldn't be in the middle of the night.

KATE: I'm sorry.

RAY: Yeah, so am I.

WALKABOUT
  • Charlie brings Shannon a fish:
CHARLIE [approaching]: There you are. As promised, you and I will be dining of fresh catch of the day.

SHANNON [squealing]: Oh my god!

CHARLIE: I hope you don't mind al fresco. It was no problem. You know what, that one actually gave me a hell of a tussle, but you have to get inside the mind of the fish, you know.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN
  • Jack and Sayid discuss their best means of survival:
JACK: Digging in together is the only way we're going to survive.

SAYID: Our best hope of survival is in being spotted by a plane or a ship, and for that we need to organize everyone to keep that signal fire burning while others scout the island for supplies. Digging in anywhere else is suicide.

  • Michael fress Jin from his handcuffs:
MICHAEL: I know you can't understand a word, and normally I'm not the talking out loud type, but since I have a captive audience,I hope for your sake you pay attention. I'm not exactly having the best month of my life. I barely knew my son, and now, I gotta be his daddy. And then to top if off, I have a deranged Korean guy trying to kill me and for what? Look, I get it, right [takes the watch out of his pocket]. It's the watch. Mine broke and I found this in the wreckage, and I figured, hey, why let a $20,000 dollar watch go to waste which is ridiculous since time doesn't matter on a damn island.

[Michael chops the handcuff from the plane and frees Jin (who looks terrified throughout).]

MICHAEL: Stay away from me. And my kid.

CONFIDENCE MAN
  • Sayid is getting ready to leave the beach after torturing Sawyer:
SAYID: I'm leaving. I don't know for how long.

KATE: Sayid, you can't. We still don't know what's out there.

SAYID: I've worse things to fear than what's in the jungle. What I did today, what I almost did, I swore to do never again. If I can't keep that promise, I have no right to be here.

KATE: There's nowhere to go.

SAYID: Someone has to walk the shore and map the island, see what else there is. I can't think of a better person to do it than the only one I trust.I hope we meet again.

SOLITARY
  • Sayid tells Danielle about Nadia:
SAYID: You'll find me in the next life if not in this one.

DANIELLE: What?

SAYID: The writing on the back of Nadia's photograph. I know what it's like to hold on to someone. I've been holding on for the past 7 years to just a thought, a blind hope that somewhere she's still alive. But the more I hold on, the more I pull away from those around me. The only way out of this, this place, is with their help. Come with me. You don't have to be alone, Danielle.

  • Hurley christens the golf tournament:
HURLEY: Welcome, to the first and hopefully last, Island Open.

WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE
  • The tide is rising, and the Losties are leaving the beach:
SAYID: Everything is getting washed out to sea. This can't be normal. The tide shifting so suddenly, rising in so short a time.

JACK: There's a lot not normal around here. At the rate this beach is eroding this fuselage is going to be underwater in a matter of days. We need to get all this stuff off the beach before nightfall.

SAYID: I just hope that moving up the coast will make a difference.

  • Sawyer and Jack discuss the halliburton:
SAWYER: Did she tell you what's inside? [Jack shakes his head.] Yeah, me neither. [He gives the case to Jack.] Hope you got yourself some jaws-of-life
back in cave-town, that's what it's going to take to pop this bitch.

JACK: I'll figure something out.

HEARTS AND MINDS
  • Hurley questions Boone about his time with Locke:
HURLEY: That's cool, except, how come you're not coming back with any? We haven't had fresh pork on a plate in about a week, dude.

BOONE: It's not like they're domesticated animals.

HURLEY: Maybe you guys aren't trying hard enough?

BOONE: We're hunting, alright?

HURLEY: I hope so, because people need food, man - solid food. This isn't a game, man.

  • Hurley shares fruit with Michael:
MICHAEL [pointing at the papaya and the knife Hurley has taken out]: Hey, you mind if I, uh. . .

HURLEY [handing over the papaya and knife]: Knock yourself out. You want to wish something on your worst enemy? Hope they step on a sea urchin. [Jin walks up and holds out a fish to Hurley.] Oh hey, thanks. Dude, has this thing already been cleaned? Are you kidding me?

  • Boone and Locke discuss Claire:
LOCKE: Apparently she doesn't even remember Ethan.

BOONE: The guy pretends to be one of us -- he drags her through the jungle for almost two weeks -- she doesn't remember him?

LOCKE: Apparently.

BOONE: You think he's around?

LOCKE: I sure hope not.

...IN TRANSLATION
  • Sayid talks to Boone about Shannon:
SAYID: I'd like to talk to you about Shannon. It's very possible your sister and I are going to become more than just friends.

BOONE: What is this? Some Middle Eastern thing? You want my blessing or something?

SAYID: My hope is you won't object.

BOONE: Yeah?

SAYID: I was extending a courtesy, not asking your permission.

NUMBERS
  • Carmen to Hurley:
CARMEN: What are you doing in there?

HURLEY: Uno momento, Mama, just checking something out.

CARMEN: I hope you're not watching those g-string mujeres again.

DEUS EX MACHINA
  • Boone and Locke are going to try and open the hatch:
BOONE: So, we're just going to build another one of your inventions, hope it works this time.

LOCKE: That's right.

BOONE: What if it doesn't?

LOCKE: Then the island will tell us what to do.

  • Locke arrives at Cooper's house to go hunting:
LOCKE: Mornin', Eddie.

EDDIE: Mornin', Mr. Locke -- you gentleman going to get some birds again?

LOCKE: I sure hope so.

DO NO HARM
  • Sayid and Shannon get closer:
SHANNON: My brother, Boone. He's not really my brother. He's my step-brother. Our parents got married when we were, like, 8 and 10. He's kind of in love with me.

SAYID: In love with you? And how do you feel towards him?

SHANNON: I'll always feel something for him. But am I in love with him in that way? No. Not at all. We're here for god knows how long, and so is Boone.

SAYID: Maybe we should go back?

SHANNON: I don't want to go back.

SAYID: Are you sure?

SHANNON: Yes. I just need to take it a little slow. Are you okay with that?

SAYID: I had no expectations.

SHANNON: Right.

SAYID: Hopes, not expectations.

THE GREATER GOOD
  • Locke tries to make amends with Shannon after Boone has died:
LOCKE: This was his. I didn't go through it.

SHANNON: Thank you.

LOCKE: Welcome. Storm coming. I should have said no -- the first time he offered to hunt with me I should have said no.

SHANNON: He would have gone anyway.

LOCKE: Yeah, I suppose he would have. I know how confused and angry you must be right now. I can't say I understand what you're going through, but I know what it feels like when you lose family. I hope you can forgive me. I'm sorry.

  • Sayid and Essam are in a van that has C4 inside. Sayid has been sent to try and find out what is their target. He tells Essam he wants to try and find Nadia that is why he was helping the Feds:
ESSAM: You used me to find a woman? [Essam puts the gun to Sayid's throat] You talked me into this.

SAYID: Essam, don't.

ESSAM: You said it was for the greater good.

SAYID: I'm begging you to go.

ESSAM: You said you were my brother. You were supposed to be my brother, my friend.

SAYID: I am your friend.

ESSAM: A friend who told me to do this for Zahra just so you could find some woman that you love?

[Essam is about to shoot Sayid, but stops.]

ESSAM: Well, then, Sayid, I hope she makes you whole again.

  • Sayid stops Shannon from possibly killing Locke for revenge of Boone's death:
LOCKE: I know what it cost you to do what you did. Thank you.

SAYID: I did it because I sense you might be our best hope of surviving here. But I don't forgive what you did. And I certainly don't trust you. And now, you're going to take me to the hatch.

LOCKE: Hatch? -- I already showed you the...

SAYID: John, no more lies.

EXODUS 2
  • Michael and Walt on the raft:
WALT: What about everybody else? Think they'll be okay?

[We hear Sawyer singing Redemption Song in the background.]

MICHAEL: I hope so, buddy. At least until we can get them some help.

  • Michael and Walt on the raft:
MICHAEL: C'mon, come here. You drive for awhile.

WALT: Really?

MICHAEL: Absolutely. Okay now, look, the most important part of this boat is the rudder. It's how you steer. You turn it gradually -- nothing sharp, okay. Push it this way.

WALT: Where are we going?

MICHAEL: Look, [holding a compass] so, we're going approximately North by Northeast. So, hopefully that puts us into a shipping lane, or we hit some land.

  • Locke has shown Jack, Hurley and Kate the Hatch:
HURLEY: So, dude? What do you think is inside of that hatch thing?

LOCKE: What do you think is inside it?

HURLEY: Stacks of TV dinners from the 50's, or something. And TVs, and cable, some cell phones, clean socks, soap, Twinkies -- you know, for dessert, after the TV dinners. Twinkies keep for, like, 8000 years, man.

LOCKE [laughing]: I like Twinkies, too.

HURLEY: C'mon, really, what do you think is inside?

LOCKE: Hope. I think hope is inside.

EXODUS 3
  • Michael is impressed that Sun gave Jin a few words in English so he can get by:
MICHAEL [to Jin]: Hey, your wife made this for you?

JIN: Sun.

MICHAEL: She sounded it out, huh -- so you could learn English?

JIN: Yes.

MICHAEL: Yeah, I wish she had made one for me. So what words are in here? English words -- what can you say?

JIN: Ah, starboard, aft, port, sail, eat.

MICHAEL [laughing]: She did you well. I hope you know how lucky are, man. [Jin indicates that the rudder is fixed] Back in business? Alrighty. [Michael grabs the watch to give it back to Jin] Oh, hey, it's yours.
