    Batteries

Hurley originally wants to find Danielle Rousseau when he sees the same cursed numbers on her maps that he used to win the lottery and which has brought him nothing but bad luck. He asks about them when he finds her, and when she agrees that yes, they must be cursed if it brought them both to this island. He is overjoyed and hugs her. Apparently this forms some sort of strange bond or trust as Hurley does return with a battery, which he turns over to Sayid to use for setting up the raft radar. Hurley tells Sayid, after handing the battery to Jack, "She says, hey."

    Boxes

At a meeting with his accountant, Hurley learns he is the owner of a box company.

KEN HAPLERIN: I would think you'd be happy. Every one of your stocks is up. You rinterest in orange futures skyrocketed after those tropical storms hit Florida. And, you are now the majority shareholder ina box company in Tustin.

    HURLEY: A box company?

KEN: Mmhmm. They make boxes, lucrative business. Everybody needs boxes. Which reminds me, your sneaker company in Canada...

This is presumably the same box company that employs Locke.

    Boxes

Later, Hurley goes back to Santa Rosa to try to learn from Lenny what the numbers' significance is.  Lenny, who only repeats the cursed numbers, stops when Hurley reveals that he had used the numbers to play the lottery:

LENNY: You used those numbers to play the lottery?
    HURLEY: Uh, yeah.

LENNY: Well, you shouldn't have done that. You've opened the box.
    HURLEY: I what?
Reference to metaphorical Pandora's box? In
    Exodus 2
Hurley and Locke talk about what they think is inside the Hatch. Locke, "Hope. I think hope is inside."

Until then, mankind had lived a life in a paradise without worry. Epimetheus told Pandora never to open the box she had received from Zeus. However, one day, Pandora's curiosity got the better of her and she opened it, releasing all the misfortunes of mankind (plague, sorrow, poverty, crime, etc.). Once opened, she shut it in time to keep one thing in the box: hope. The world remained extremely bleak for an unspecified interval, until Pandora "chanced" to revisit the box again, at which point Hope fluttered out. Thus, mankind always has hope in times of evil, but Hope has a great deal of catching up to do. http://www.answers.com/pandora

    Fire

Hurley has just won the lottery and he buys his mom a new house. As they pull up and he starts to show her the house, it catches on fire.

    Fire

While at his attorney's office he finds out he "had" a sneaker company.
Hurley: I have a sneaker company in Canada?
Ken: Well, not any more. It was destroyed in a fire last month.

    Shoes

Hurley owns a shoe factory in Canada.
