- Outside  Influences -
Charles Widmore

    Philanthropist and Industrialist

Has a daughter, Penelope (Desmond's ex girlfriend)

In "Live Together, Die Alone", Desmond is approached by Charles Widmore after being released from prison.
Charles shows Desmond the letters that he had been sending to Penny Widmore from prison, letters which Charles intercepted and kept from Penny.
He also gives Desmond a box full of cash, and tells him to stay away from his daughter.

      Quote:

Desmond goes outside and it's pouring down rain. A well dressed man in the back seat of a car rolls down his window and says, "You want a ride?"

      Desmond: "Not with you,"

Widmore: "Get in the car," as he rolls up the window.

Desmond gets in the car and sees two boxes.

Desmond: "You bring me a present?"

Widmore: "Actually, two presents, One of these boxes contains your past, Hume. The other, your future. Go ahead, open it."

Desmond opens a box full of envelopes and shakes his head. He pulls one pile out. They are letters from him to Penelope Widmore.

Desmond: "You're a bastard, you know that?"

Widmore: "The fact that she never received your sentiments was good for her. Good, because as far as she's concerned you've forsaken her.
And that's the way it's going to stay."

      Desmond: "Is it now?"

Widmore: "Penelope's moved on, Hume. She's getting married."

He opens a box full of money.

Widmore: "This is for your new life, away from my daughter. The conditions are simple. No contact. No calls. No post. You just run away, Desmond."

Desmond: "And what makes you think I would just run away?"

      Widmore: "Because you're a coward."

Desmond runs into Libby and tells her that he wants to enter a solo race around the world sponsored by Charles. He shows her a brochure.

    Quote
There was a mass of spectator craft out in the Solent - that came [as a] surprise. We were not expecting so many people, and it made it difficult to steer,
especially since there was no marshaling to speak of. We almost ran down a rubber dinghy, but managed somehow to avoid it at the last.
