In the Orientation film, Dr. Marvin Candle, tells the viewer, that, "From the moment the alarm
sounds you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor..."

Sawyer says that 40 people made it.

Jack notes that they've been there for 40 days.
|
|

Desmond warns Jack that in 15 minutes, if the button is not pushed, something terrible may happen.

Sayid gets the computer fixed and Locke goes to enter in the code. He has all the numbers right -
Hurley is beside himself when he hears what the code is and when Locke gets the last number (42) wrong
and goes to enter in 32 instead, Hurley does not correct him. Jack comes back and tells Locke, "It's not 32.
It's 42. He just told me --Desmond. The last number's 42.

Desmond leaves the hatch after it looks like
the computer is no good after he shot it accidentally. He tells Jack
(who followed him), if by
chance he gets the computer up and running in time, the code is 4, 8,
15, 16, 23, 42. Then to press execute button.

The Orientation film ends by explaining that, due to an
incident on the island, the viewers must enter the code into the
computer every 108 minutes for the next 540 days (1.5 years), after
which replacements will arrive.
