Blazing Saddles
Sawyer calls Hurley Mongo, the name of the sheriff's deputy played by Alex Karras in the 1974 comedy film "Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks. This character was also used to base the Giant Gingerbread man in "Shrek 2".

SAWYER [to Hurley]: Fun time's over, Mongo. Why don't you go hit the buffet?

Cool Hand Luke
Sawyer talks Jack into playing a round of Texas Hold 'em where Jack ends up beating him in a nice hand. Sawyer refers to Jack as Cool Hand Luke when asking him what he's got:
| Quote: |
JACK: You've still got 3 papayas -- call or fold.
SAWYER: Well, you're in trouble now, Cool Hand. Pocket queens makes me the set. [he chuckles]
JACK [showing his cards]: King's wired. |
Cool Hand Luke obtained his nickname after winning a seven-card stud pot on a stone-cold bluff. Interesting also is that the character of Luke is
often interpreted allegorically as a Christ figure, and the film plays
on many aspects of the story of Jesus. Many have linked Jack to this same interpretation since the reveal of his tattoo and the references of being a great leader.
