Ethan kidnaps Charlie and Claire. Jack and Kate find one of his finger
tapes on the trail when searching for him after the abduction. Jack
tells Kate that Charlie is leaving them a trail to follow. Charlie wears lettered tape on his fingers. At first they say FATE (PIL), then he changes it to LATE (TR).
Dominic also played Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and along with Pippin they were held captive
by the Orcs. Pippin leaves his elven broach of Lorien on the trail as a
sign for Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. This takes place in the second movie of the trilogy, The Two Towers.
Both the brooch and the finger tapes are reminiscent of the crumbs left
by Hansel and Gretel to help them find their way out of the woods.
Locke also used this technique in this episode. After they split from
Jack and Kate, he and Boone tied strips of a red shirt to trees along
the way so they could find their way back to camp.
