The Monster
Exodus 2

Jack, Kate, Hurley and Locke are at the Black Rock. Danielle left aftershowing them the place; Arzt blew himself up handling dynamite. After wrapping the TNT and stashing it in backpacks, the group makes a plan to trek back to the hatch. Locke suggests they stagger themselves. Jack replies, "All right. We stagger. If anyone hears anything or sees anything ..." and Hurley quips, "Like a security system that eats people?"

They journey through the jungle until a loud, screeching noise brings them up short. A large bird takes flight. Hurley says, "Whoever named this place 'dark territory?' ... Genius." They continue, passing a red flower in the bush. Metallic, rythmic noises come toward them and a wisp of black smoke flies past. The rattling stops again. Kate asks Jack, "Did you see that?" Yes, he did.

"We've got to get out of here." As they start to move, the fluttering and screeching noises start again. Trees shoot up and out of the ground in front of them, propelled by great force. Kate and Hurley run away. Jack carefully removes his backpack and starts to follow them.

Locke stays where he is at and carefully removes his backpack. The "monster" sounds get closer to him. He takes a step toward the "monster." Jack turns to see Locke walking toward the creature. He turns to go after Locke, who is peering around the trees in trying to catch a glimpse of the thing. The tree right next to him is pulled up explosively by the roots, Locke falls backwards to the ground. He covers his eyes with his arms. Jack runs toward him, calling his name.

The "monster," unseen by us, roars up and looks down on Locke, who uncovers his eyes to look directly at the creature. The look on his face is one of absolute terror, (Note: This look is very different from the look of awe on his face when he saw the creature in Walkabout.)
