Sun's Island Experience
Sun Paik is the daughter of a rich and corrupt Korean automobile manufacturer.
Her parents arranged a date with her and the manager of the Seoul Gateway hotel, Jae Lee.
They hit it off well, but when Lee told her that he was only dating her
to keep his parents off his back and was planning to marry a girl he
met at Harvard in 6 months, Sun was disappointed and left. Later that
day, she accidentally bumped into Jin-Soo Kwon, who had just quit his
doorman job at the Seoul Gateway hotel.
Sun fell in love with Jin. She knew what kind of person her
father was and wanted to elope with Jin, but he insisted on doing
things properly. They didn't have a honeymoon because Jin wanted to
make a good impression on her father right away.
Soon after their wedding, Sun is approached by a woman claiming to have incriminating information about Jin's parents: namely that his mother was a prostitute. She will keep quiet for $100,000. After a little sleuthing, she learns that both of Jin's parents are in fact alive. Sun approaches her father for the money to keep the woman quiet, and he gives it to her with the understanding that Jin will now work directly for him.
Jin worked long hours,
and one night he came home covered in blood. He refused to tell her
anything except that he "did whatever her father asked of him", and he
did it for them. Sun's imagination filled her mind up with fear over
what Jin was capable of.
She and Jin were having problems conveiving a child, which
greatly upset Jin. After their fertility doctor told them that Sun was
infertile, Jin got angry and accused Sun of knowing this before they
got married. Later, the fertility doctor told Sun that it was actually
Jin who was infertile, but he lied because he was aftaid that Jin would
burn down his clinic.
Sun decided to leave her husband and secretly took English
lessons with Jae Lee. Later, she and Jae had a secret affair, that her father discovered. Mr. Paik demanded that Jin kill Jae Lee, but Jin instead beats Jae Lee severely with a warning that Jae Lee should leave the country. Before Jin can drive away from Jae Lee's hotel, however, his lifeless body falls onto Jin's car. Sun attends Jae Lee's funeral where her father finds her and urges her to go home to her husband.
She made arrangements with someone who seemed to
know a lot about how to disappear quietly, and was seconds away from
slipping away from Jin at the airport when he gave her a beautiful
flower, like he used to do long ago. Sun remembered how much she loved
Jin, and they boarded Oceanic Flight 815 together.
