Reason on Plane: Brian
(Walt's "other" dad, gives Michael two tickets (one was round trip from
NY to Sydney and back to NY for Michael and one was one way from Sydney
to NY for Walt) Walt was to go to NY to live with Michael.
Profession: Was an artist, then a construction worker.
Since Walt and Michael were basically strangers to each other, and
both had just had their lives disrupted, their relationship started out
rocky. Locke found and gave Vincent the dog to Michael so he could be the one to bring Vincent to his son.
Michael found a $20,000 watch in the wreckage, not knowing it was in Jin's safekeeping, so Jin attacked him for it. Sun
revealed to Michael that she spoke English and why Jin attacked him, so
Michael gave Jin the watch back. But they still didn't like each other.
When Michael caught Locke teaching Walt how to throw a knife,
Michael's patience ran out and he decided to start building a raft to
take Walt off the island. When Walt still tried to spend time with Locke, Michael got angry and threw the Spanish comic book (with a polar bear in it) into the fire.
Walt ran off, and Locke helped Michael track him, and together they rescued Walt from a polar bear. Sawyer
bought a spot on Michael's raft by giving him a coil of wire. Michael
continued with the raft until it was burned down. Since he had gotten
into an argument with Jin earlier over how he treated his wife, Michael
suspected Jin of burning the raft down, and when Sawyer brought Jin to
the beach, Michael started beating him up until Sun shouted "STOP IT!"
in English in front of everybody. Sun told them that Jin didn't set the
fire, and in fact was the first one who tried to put the fire out.
Realizing that his wife didn't trust him, Jin left her at the
caves and went to the beach where he started helping Michael build a
second raft, in exchange for the last spot on it. As the second attempt
at making a raft was nearing completion, Michael fell ill after
drinking from a water bottle spiked with a minor toxin. Walt confessed
to Michael that he was the one who burned down the raft because he
didn’t want to leave the island. Michael offered to stay on the island
with Walt, but he said that they had to leave.
Walt and Michael sailed off on the raft. When Sawyer dove into
the water to retrieve the rudder, Michael found the gun Sawyer was
carrying. When night fell at sea, the radar picked up a blip. Michael
fired the flare gun and a small boat approached. They were not
friendly. They were the Others. The leader, "Mr. Friendly"
insisted that Walt had to come with them. There was a brief struggle,
and Walt was taken by the Others, and they threw a bomb that caused
major damage to the raft.
Season Two
After Walt was taken, a hysterical Michael almost drowned swimming
after the Others' boat. Angry at himself for taking Walt from the
relative safety of the camp, he lashed out angrily at Sawyer, blaming
him for attracting the Others with a flare. Michael shot a shark that
was going after Sawyer, and told Sawyer that he blamed himself for
Walt’s kidnapping. He swore that he’d get Walt back. Sawyer and Michael
drifted back to the island and found Jin. They were all taken prisoner
by the tail survivors, then once the tail survivors realized that their
captives were on Flight 815 as well, they were taken to the Arrow
bunker. The tail survivors decided to hike across the island and
reunite with the fuselage survivors. When gathering supplies, Libby told Michael that they
came from inland. Michael immediately set off into the jungle in hopes
of finding the Others and getting Walt back. When Jin and Eko caught up with him, they convinced Michael that this was not going to work. He went back with them.
Michael overheard Sawyer say that he thinks that Michael doesn't
care about anyone or anything except his kid, and later Sawyer told
Michael that if Michael was the injured one that he would leave him
behind. But in spite of that, Michael made a crude stretcher to carry
Sawyer in when his wound made him pass out.
When Ana-Lucia
decided to resolve the crisis created when she killed Shannon, she sent
Michael back to the survivors with her ransom demands. Michael found
Sun's garden and told her that Jin was OK. She led him to the Swan
bunker. After Jack and Eko went to find Ana-Lucia, Michael returned to
the beach where Vincent greeted him.
At the same time when Locke and Eko saw the film that warned
them not to use the computer to communicate with anyone, Michael was
examining the wiring of the computer when it gave a new chime. He
looked at it and someone had sent a message to him. He said his name
was Michael and asked who it was. The response was "Dad?" Michael
thought it was Walt communicating with him, but he didn't tell anyone
about the messages.
Michael started getting shooting lessons from Locke, while
continuing to secretly communicate with the mystery person on the
computer. He was getting some instructions from the mystery messenger.
Jack came in mid message-session, but when he looked at the computer,
no messages were visible.
After Michael got a final set of instructions on the computer,
he asked Locke to open the gun vault so he could borrow a gun for
shooting practice. After Locke did that, Michael hit him on the head
and took a rifle. When Jack found Locke, Michael forced him into the
Vault. He told Jack that he was going after his son. Jack tried to talk
him out of it, offering to go with him, but Michael was insistent on
going now, and going alone. Jack didn't think he was going to shoot him
and called his bluff, but instead Michael threatened to shoot the
computer. Michael told Jack that he had no idea what the computer was.
Michael took off into the jungle heading due north, instead of east to
near where where the tail section survivors were taken by the Others.
Locke, Jack and Sawyer followed, and at one point they heard 7 shots.
Locke found 3 casings from Michael's rifle, which might indicate that
he only fired three times and someone else fired four times. The Others
Jack encountered didn't seem concerned about Michael and told Jack that
Michael would never find them.
Twelve days after Michael took off into the jungle, he emerged
in front of an astonished Kate and Jack in the clearing where Mr.
Friendly warned Jack. He collapsed, and Kate and Jack took him back to
the Swan bunker. He woke up after several hours, and told Jack, Kate,
Locke and Ana-Lucia a story. He had gone back to the spot where the
tailies had camped, and followed the coast. He spotted an Other and
followed him back to a tent village. The Others were all in pretty bad
shape and ate dried fish. He didn't see Walt, the missing stewardess
Cindy, or any children. However, two Others with guns were guarding a
hatch to another bunker. Michael said that he thought the Oceanic
survivors could prevail. When he and Ana-Lucia were left in the bunker,
Ana-Lucia told him that she couldn't bring herself to kill Henry Gale.
Michael offered to kill Gale for her, so Ana-Lucia gave him the gun and
combination. Michael told Ana-Lucia that he was sorry, then shot her
once in the chest, killing her. Libby heard the noise and came into the
room, startling Michael, who reflexively shot her twice. Michael
released Henry Gale, and shot himself in the arm. Henry Gale likely
took the gun.
Michael stumbled out of the main entrance of the Swan just as
Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Locke were getting back. He told a disjointed
story about Henry Gale escaping and shooting him.
What Michael hadn't told the Oceanic survivors was that he had
actually been captured by the Others almost immediately. The shots were
fired when Michael came upon a large party of them, who likely were
looking for Michael. Mr. Friendly ensnared Michael in a bolo. Michael
was a witness when a hooded Kate was brought in. Mr. Friendly warned
him to be quiet and had him gagged. The young girl who helped Claire
escape was referred to as "Alex". She asked Michael about Claire and
Claire's baby. Two days later, the group arrived at a tent village on
the north shore of the island, beneath a strange landmark - a rock wall
with a square hole in it. Possibly the remains of an old building. The
description of the village that Michael gave Jack was accurate. Michael
was turned over to someone called "Miss Klugh". She kept him tied up in
one of the tents and asked him questions about Walt for the next eight
days. At that time, Michael demanded once again to see Walt. Miss Klugh
told Michael that he would get three minutes to see Walt. She brought
him in. Walt said that they make him take tests, and that the Others
are pretending. Walt begged his father to help him, and said that he
loved him before he was taken away. Miss Klugh offered Michael a deal:
free the prisoner the Oceanic survivors have captured, and bring only
Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley back to this camp, and Michael and Walt
would go free. Michael, now a broken man, agreed.
After the bodies of his victims were carried out, Michael
started cleaning up the blood. Eko came in. Michael asked Eko if he
beleived in hell. Eko told him that when he was a priest in England, he
heard a confession from a young boy that he beat his dog to death with
a shovel because it had bitten his baby sister on the cheek. The boy
asked if he would go to hell. Eko told the boy that god would forgive
him. But the boy didn't care about forgiveness, and was more worried
that the dog would be waiting for him in hell. Michael went into the
jungle and threw up. Jack found him and Michael told him his plan: Only
he, Jack, Sawyer, Kate and Hurley must come with him to get Walt back.
Everyone was surprised to see Michael back on the beach. When Michael
learned that Sawyer had invited Sayid to come, Michael was angry and
told Sayid not to come. Hurley didn't want to go at first, but at the
funeral for Libby and Ana-Lucia, he turned to Michael and said that he
was going to go.
Before they set off on Michael's hike to get Walt back, Kate
warned the group that the Others might be pretending, with the fake
beards they wear. Michael insisted they weren't pretending. In the
jungle, a large bird startled the group, and Michael tried to shoot it,
only to find out that his gun wasn't loaded. Jack said that he must
have forgotten to load it, and gave Michael a full clip, but Michael
started to worry that Jack might suspect him. After Sawyer shot one of
the Others who were following them, the group wanted to turn back,
fearing the second one would escape and warn of the Oceanic survivors
apprach. Jack said that they'd already been warned and confronted
Michael, intimidated by Jack's anger, Michael confessed to letting
Henry Gale out, and to the murders of Ana-Lucia and Libby. He said that
he did it because he thought it was the only way to get his sone back,
and he said he would do it again. The group was disgusted, but
continued on anyway. Michael lead them to a clearing deep inland where
the Others ambushed the group and captured Sawyer, Hurley, Kate and
Jack. Michael went with them to Pala Ferry dock. Henry Gale drove a
boat up to the dock. He told Michael that he wasn't happy with the deal
Miss Klugh had made with him, but he said he got more then they
bargained for when they got Walt, so he would abide by the terms of the
deal. He gave Michael the boat and told him to steer to compass heading
325 to find rescue. Michael asked Henry how he knew he wouldn't tell
civilization about the island. Henry said that it was irrleevant since
he doubted that anyone would be able to find the island. He also noted
that because of what Michael did to get his son back, he was unlikely
to tell anyone. Michael found Walt on the boat, and they left the
island.
Trivia:
Sawyer in (EX3) says that Michael has the
patience of a saint because if Walt talked to him the way he did to
Michael he would have shown him the back of his hand (probably same as
his upbringing) a long time ago.
St. Michael the Archangel
(Hebrew "Who is like God?").
St. Michael is one of the principal angels; his name was the
war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the
enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture:
