Kate Austen
Island Activites
Since arriving on the island, Kate has been involved with most of
the major developments that have occurred to the survivors, from the
recovery of the transceiver, to the discovery of the repeating
transmission, the polar bear, the cave-in, the decision to move to the
caves, the hunt for Ethan, and the final confrontation with him. This
is due in no small part to her friendship with Sayid, Charlie, and
Hurley, as well as her seeming infatuation with both Jack and Sawyer,
although her relationship to Jack has suffered because of her continued
manipulation and equivocation. Kate delivered Claire's baby boy (Aaron) in the middle of the jungle, while Jack was trying to save Boone's life.
She revealed to Sawyer that she was married previously.
She was the first one who went down the hatch, and was rendered
unconscious in some way. Locke, knowing that she was a fugitive
arranged it so that she was the one who ended tied up, and he slipped a
knife into her pants before Desmond locked Kate into the storeroom.
Kate freed herself fairly easily, and made her escape through an air
vent, stopping only to filch Desmond's supply of Apollo chocolate bars.
Girl loves her chocolate. She saw Jack through an air-duct opening, but
he couldnt hear her shouts over the music. When Desmond fired a
warning shot at Jack, the shot nearly hit Kate.
Kate slipped out of the vents into the weapons locker, grabbed
a shotgun and hit Desmond, causing him to accidentally fire his gun.
Kate later went to get Sayid, but she left through the secret front
door of the bunker. She tested out the shower in the bunker, and was
happy it worked.
When Sun told her that she thought that something bad happened
to the raft because of the message bottle she buried, Kate and Sun went
to dig it up. Kate never said goodbye to Sawyer, and was hoping to find
a message from him in it. She didn't find a message, but found Sun's
ring instead.
She and Jack were just starting a three-hole golf competition
for bragging rights, when Eko walked in carrying Sawyer. When the
semi-conscious Sawyer spit out the antibiotic pills Jack tried to give
him, Kate was able to get him to swallow them.
Kate watched Sawyer all night, only leaving when Jack sent her
out to get fruit for Sawyer. In the jungle she saw a black horse. She
thought that was what she got from not sleeping. When everyone in the
bunker left to go to Shannon's funeral, Jack left her to mind Sawyer
and the button. When Sawyer was mumbling something she leaned over him,
and apparently he grabbed her and yelled "You killed me! Why did you
kill me!" It is possible that was a hallucination by Kate, or else
Sawyer was in a delusional state. Kate fled the bunker in terror,
thinking that Sawyer was channelling the spirit of her murdered father.
When Jack later yelled at her for abandoning the bunker she angrily
told him that she was sorry that she was not as good as he was before
she broke down in tears, which turned into a Jack-Kate make-out
session. But torn between her feelings for Jack and Sawyer, she backed
away and ran off into the jungle. When she asked Sayid if he believed
in ghosts, he told her that he saw Walt in the jungle. Kate resumed
watching over the unconscious Sawyer when Sun had to step out. She
wasn't sure if Wayne was really in Sawyer, but she decided to talk to
Wayne anyway. Sawyer wasn't unconscious and heard everything Kate had
said, asking her who the hell Wayne was. Kate helped Sawyer get out
into the sunlight. She and Sawyer both saw the black horse.
Kate brought Sawyer back to the Swan Bunker and she and Sawyer
discovered that Jack and Locke were locked in the weapons locker. She
wanted to go with Jack, Locke and Sawyer on the hike to find Michael,
but Jack insisted she stay in the bunker to keep an eye on the
computer. Kate pretended to comply, but she secretly followed them. She
ended up getting captured by the Others, and used as a hostage. Jack
was forced to hand over the groups weapons to get her back. Afterwards,
he was angry at her. Locke called Sawyer "James" near her, but she may
not have been paying attention. Sawyer comforted her about Jack being
angry by saying that if he'd been told to stay behind he'd have
followed Jack, too.
Sawyer manipulated Kate as part of his plan to get the guns,
and she was angry that he played her. She told him that he think that
his con of Jack and Locke wasn't about his pilfered stash or
controlling the guns, it was about getting people to hate him.
When Rousseau came to the beach to warn Claire about her baby
getting sick, Kate shooed her away. The next day, she got a gun from
Sawyer and went with Claire into the jungle looking for Rousseau. They
found Rousseau, and using a combination of Rousseau and Claire's
memories, located the Medical Bunker. Kate found a locker room that
contained clothes, makeup, and fake beards. She realized that the
Others shabby appearance was a disguise.
Kate was with Jack when they found the Dharma supply drop, and
learned of Henry Gale's existence when Charlie, Sayid and Ana-Lucia
showed up and went back to the bunker.
When Jack decided to try and trade Henry Gale for Walt, he took
Kate with him, assuming that since the Others didn't try and take
either of them when Kate was held hostage by "Mr. Friendly",
that they would be relatively safe. Kate saw a doll in the jungle, and
before Jack could stop her, she picked it up, catching both herself and
Jack in a net trap. Kate tried to use the gun to shoot the rope holding
it, but missed. Jack's shot got them out. Kate told Jack that the trap
didn't seem to be very sophisticated for the Others, since they wear
diguises and had access to another bunker. Jack was a bit annoyed that
she hadn't told him, but let it go when she pointed out he didn't tell
her about Henry Gale. Waiting at night in the clearing where Mr. Friendly confronted them, an exhausted Michael came stumbling out of the bushes.
Kate didn't know what to believe when Michael related his story
about the Others living in yurts and eating dried fish, but she didn't
contradict it. She went with Jack to try and help convince Sawyer to
give the guns back to Jack.
After determining that there was nothing to be done for Libby,
Jack told Kate to go with Sawyer on his trip to get the heroin, and
find out where his stash was. She was surprised to learn the stash was
under Sawyer's tent. Outside, they met Hurley and Kate told him the bad
news. When libby died, Kate cried. Sawyer comforted her.
Kate helped dig the graves for Libby and Ana-Lucia. She went
with Jack, Michael, Hurley, and Sawyer on Michael's mission to rescue
Walt. Along the way she spotted that they were being followed by a pair
of Others. She tipped off Sawyer and they opened fire. Sawyer killed
one, but the other fled. Kate wanted to chase him, but Jack revealed
that it didn't matter as Michael had already tipped the Others off.
They continued into a large open area which had hundreds of notebooks
in tubes sent from the Pearl station. Kate, like Sawyer and Jack, was
hit with a dart and knocked out. Jack tried to carry her, but only made
it a few feet before he fell. She and the others were taken to the Pala
Ferry dock, where Michael and Walt were let go on the boat, Hurley was
told to tell the survivors not to come here again. Henry Gale told
Kate, Jack and Sawyer that they were coming "home" with the Others.
Indeed, the Others took them to another island, where Kate was given new clothes to wear, a shower and a fresh breakfast, but then left in a polar bear cage across the way from Sawyer. She and Sawyer spent their time with the Others breaking rocks, when Juliet approaches Kate and has her ask Jack to operate on Ben, otherwise the Others are going to kill Sawyer. Upon returning to her cage, she tells Sawyer that she can leave her cage, and encourages him to run with her, but he won't go. The two instead make love in Sawyer's cage. Which Jack sees on Ben's television screens.
When Jack halts the surgery, he demands that Kate be freed. She and Sawyer, with the help of Alex, escape back to their island with Karl. Once home, Kate is desperate to go back and save Jack, but Sawyer won't help her. She, Sayid and Locke with help from Danielle, find the Flame hatch and Mikhail, and later make their way to the bunkers, where Kate is discovered and held captive. Eventually, the Others gas Kate, and abandon the bunkers, leaving Kate handcuffed to Juliet. The two women make their way back through the jungle to rescue Jack, fight, face the smoke monster, and eventually get back to the bunkers where they meet up with Jack and Sayid.
After the survivors are reunited, they travel to the radio tower to turn off Danielle's transmission, and on the journey, Jack reveals to Kate that he loves her.
