Jack Shephard
Jack's Pre-Island Experience
Jack Shepherd is a brilliant
neurosurgeon living in at once in the shadow of his father, Christian
Shepherd, and under the harsh glare of his father's expectations. He is
a man full of determination, commitment and certainty in his own skills.
As a child, Jack's heroic nature got the
best of him when he stepped in to save a friend from a cruel bully. The
bully, originally uninterested in attacking Jack, turned on him for
trying to defend his friend. When Jack tells his father what his
happened to him, Christian delivers a crushing speech to the young
Jack:
"I had a
boy on my table today. I don't know, maybe a year younger than
you. He had a bad heart. It got real hairy, real fast.
Everybody's looking at your old man to make decisions. And I was
able to make those decisions because at the end of the day, after
the boy died, I was able to wash my hands and come home to
dinner. You know, watch a little Carol Burnett, laugh till my
sides hurt. And how can I do that, hmm? And even when I fail, how
do I do that, Jack? Because I have what it takes. Don't choose,
Jack, don't decide. You don't want to be a hero, you don't try
and save everyone because when you fail. . . you just don't have
what it takes."
As an adult, Jack becomes a doctor, just like his father, and
works in his father's hospital. One day a young woman, Sarah, is rushed
into the emergency room after a car accident. Jack makes a snap
decision to save her, at the expense of the other victim of the crash.
Jack saves the woman's life, and goes on to promise that she will dance
at her wedding, despite the debilitating injuries she's suffered.
Worried that he's failed, he goes jogging, and meets Desmond, who
suggests that perhaps miracles are possible. When he returns to Sarah's
room, it appears that indeed, she has been "fixed."
Jack marries Sarah, despite some apprehensions. He desperately
afraid of failing, and most of all, worried that he'll fail at being a
good husband to her. Indeed, some tensions grow over the course of
their marriage. At one point, Sarah tells Jack that she took a
pregnancy test, and added "don't worry, it was negative."
Later in his career, Jack and Christian are approached by a
wealthy Italian man looking for help with his aggressive spinal tumors.
It looks like a lost cause, but Jack is confident that he should at
least be allowed to operate on him. Jack grows close to the man's
beautiful daughter, and Christian warns him to not cross the line with
her. Unfortunately for jack, the Italian does not survive the surgery.
While Jack comforts the daughter in the hospital parking lot, the
woman kisses him. It's a kiss that he reciprocates. Feeling guilty, he
returns home to Sarah, confesses everything, and tells her that he will
fix this--but Sarah has her own news. She's been seeing someone else,
and she's leaving Jack.
Jack doesn't respond to the news that Sarah is leaving him very
well. He's become obsessed with learning the name of the man his wife
is leaving him for, and refuses to let it go.Sarah won't tell him, and
so Jack steals her contact list from her cell phone. His father finds
him calling the numbers one by one, and tries to stop him, when his own
phone rings. Christian is on her list. Jack is convinced that his
father is the man Sarah is having an affair with, and follows his
father to a hotel. Expecting to catch his father and wife in a
compromising position, he instead discovers that his father has been
attending AA meetings. Undeterred, Jack instigates a fight with his
father, and ends up arrested. When Sarah bails him out, she tells him
that his father has fallen after the wagon as a result.
Following his divorce, Jack spent some time in Thailand in an attempt to "find himself." There he met Achara, a mysterious Thai woman who claims she has a "gift." Jack, curiosity gets the better of him, depsite Achara's pleas that they simply have fun together, and Jack follows her to her place of business: a tattoo parlor. There, Achara explains that her gift is the ability to "see" who a person is. Jack demands to know who he is--and Achara tells him: a leader, a great man. Jack demands that she tattoo this on him, and depsite her qualms--it is against her culture, and there will be conequences--she does. Once marked, Jack is attacked by Achara's brother Chet, with a warning that Jack leave Thailand and never come back.
Some time prior to the flight, Jack uncovered the fact his father,
Dr. Christian Shephard, operating on a woman while under the influence
of alcohol; he had created an untenable situation in the operating
room. Jack relieved his father from the surgery, but was unable to
repair the damage, and the woman died. Initially, Jack's father played
on his son's sense of respect and family, and successfully convinced
Jack to sign off on a report stating that the woman simply was beyond
medical assistance. However, during the medical inquiry into the
patient's death, Jack discovered that the woman was pregnant, a detail
his father had neglected to mention. Unable
to remain quiet, Jack revealed what really happened to the inquiry
board. This led to the end of his father's medical career, with
Christian falling into a depression, and eventually fleeing to Sydney.
Jack was essentially ordered by his mother to go to Sydney and find Christian. While there, Jack learned that his father had died while on an alcoholic binge.
Forced to bring his father home for burial, Jack boarded Flight 815
with his father's casket in tow. He meets Locke on the flight, and sits
in a window seat across the aisle from Rose. Just prior to the crash,
he converses with Rose, whose husband has left for the lavatory,
comforting her during the turbulence. He blacked out prior to the
disintegration of the aircraft and did not see the tail section break
off. He was evidently thrown clear of the wreckage into the jungle.
