Hurley's Pre-Island Life

A young man from the Los Angeles area, Hugo Reyes, better known by his nickname, Hurley, is not simply the laid-back everyman he at first appears. Before the crash, Hurley had become extremely wealthy, winning a multi-million dollar lottery using numbers revealed to him by a psychiatric patient in a mental hospital. Afterwards, people around seemed to be afflicted by misfortunes: his grandfather suddenly died during an interview with news crews; lightning struck at the funeral; Hurley's brother lost his wife to another woman; his mother broke her ankle; the new home Hurley bought for her caught on fire; and Hurley himself was mistakenly arrested. Yet, he continued to experience incredible luck, with his money and acquisitions continuing to accumulate, including ownership of a box company in Tustin, California, which is likely the same company at which John Locke was a collections supervisor. Hurley came to believe that the lottery numbers he used-- 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42-- were cursed.

When Hurley returned to the hospital to discover the origin of "the numbers," the patient, Leonard, revealed that he heard about them from Sam Toomey, a naval officer who heard the numbers while monitoring radio signals. Hurley tracked down the man to his home in the outback of Australia, only to find out from his wife that he had also thought the numbers were cursed, and killed himself to finally escape them. Hurley now believes that the airplane crash was also his fault.

Hurley's mother is Catholic and doesn't believe in curses. When Hurley first began to think that the money he won was cursed, he got slapped in the face.

In DAVE, we learn that Hurley feels responsible for two people's deaths. At a party, Hurley stepped onto an overloaded deck, designed to only hold 8 people. There were 23 people on it at the time. The deck collapsed, and two people died. Hurley assumed responsibility for their deaths, because of his size, and slipped into a catatonic state. This is what led Carmen, Hurley's mother, to institutionalize him at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institution.

After he was released from Santa Rosa, he managed to get his job back at Mr. Cluck's. It was during this time that Hurley learned he won the lottery. However, worried that the money would change his relationships with his friends, Johnny and Starla, he hesitates to tell them. He and Johnny quit their jobs at Mr. Clucks and spend one last happy day together before Johnny learns that Hurley hadn't told him about the winnings.

Hurley purchases the Mr. Clucks he once worked at as a fry-cook, but before it can open, the restaurant is destroyed by a meteroite, killing a reporter (Tricia Tanaka) who happened to be inside with her crew. This is the final straw for Hurley, who decides it is time to go to Australia and learn about the origin of the numbers. His mother, however, disagrees and finds Hurley's long-lost father, the man who abandoned him 17 years before. David Reyes attempts to presuade Hurley that he's free of the curse by paying a psychic to "exorcise" him, but Hurley sees through the ploy. Angered at his father's abandonment and duplicity, Hurley leaves for Australia.
