FLASHBACK SUMMARY:
Kate's flashback opens with her waiting outside a small house, playing with a lighter as a truck pulls up. A drunk man stumbles out of the vehicle, and Kate helps him into the house. As she helps Wayne get into the bed, he leers at Kate, and disgusted, she leaves. She walks out of the house, gets on her motorcycle and drives away as the house explodes.
Kate next stops in at her mother's diner. She gives Diane an envelope containing an insurance policy that she took out on the house, and tells her mother that Kate won't be seeing her for a while.
Kate is in the bus station when Ed Mars, the Marshal catches up with her, and informs her that her "Momma gave (her) up." As Mars is driving her to the arraignment, he explains that he knows what her story is:
"White trash mom divorces dad, starts up with some
guy who's a drinker. He knocks her around a little bit, she
marries him, because, you know, that's what happens. And then
this drunk, this Wayne, he moves into your house, and you get to
lay there every night and listen to him doing your mom right
there in daddy's old bedroom. And even that wouldn't be so bad if
he didn't beat her up all the time. But she loves him. She
defends him. If that don't make a person want to kill somebody I
don't know what does. But the question is now, why now? Why after
all these years did you just decide to blow poor Wayne up? He
come knocking on your door late at night?"
But Kate says that Wayne never touched her. This is when a black horse steps out into the road, the Marshal swerves to miss it, and crashes the car. Mars is knocked unconscious, and Kate uses the opportunity to make her escape.
Kate then visits Sam Austen at the Army recruiting station. She
confronts him with the fact that Wayne is her actual father--a fact
that she had never known while growing up. Sam admits that this is the case, and that he
never told Kate the truth because he knew that she would kill Wayne.
He then tells Kate that he has to contact the authorities. Kate asks
him to give her an hour head start, and he agrees.
