FLASHBACK SUMMARY:
The first flashback is in the living room of Hurley's mother's house. Hurley, sits in his Mr. Cluck's uniform, holding a lottery ticket, as the lotto numbers flash on the television (4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42) Hurley passes out. Hurley's mom is on Hurley for not eating well and not exercising (hence why he probably passed out she thinks). "You have to change your life Hugo," she says. "You think someone else will change it for you? Maybe if you pray every day Jesus Christ will come down from Heaven, take 200 pounds and bring you a decent woman ... and a new car."
The next flashbacks shows Hurley quiting his job at Mr. Cluck's after being caught eating on the job. (Randy is his boss too!) Hurley then goes for a joyride with his best friend Johnny. They stop off at a record store, listen to a bit of Drive Shaft (or Suck Shaft according to Johnny),. Hurley gets guts and finally asks a clerk named Starla out. And to get back at Randy and the Mr. Cluck issue, Hurley and Johnny steal a boatload of garden gnomes to spell out "Cluck You" on his former boss' front lawn.
In the final flashback, Hurley's friend notices a news crew perched outside a local convenience store. Johnny pulls his van into the parking lot for a closer look, and that's when it becomes clear that the crew has descended on the store because this particular outlet sold the winning lottery ticket in a massive payout. Hurley watches from inside the van. But the store clerk (he's also the guy wearing the chicken suit in Hurley's dream) spots him and points to him saying he's the one. Reporters and camera crews rush to the van. Hurley looks very sad. He looks at Johnny, who looks surprised and then let down. He doesn't understand why Hurley wouldn't have told him about the lottery win.
The curse has officially begun.
