FLASHBACK SUMMARY:
In DAVE, we learn about Hurley's time at Santa Rosa, and why he was institutionalized. Hurley's doctor, Dr. Brooks, is having a difficult time convincing Hurley to talk to him about his issues. Hurley has been institutionalized at the hospital after a terrible accident that Hurley blames himself for. At a party, Hurley stepped onto an overloaded deck (designed for 8 people, there were 23 people on it at the time), and the deck collapsed. Two people died, and Hurley blamed himself and his size. In response, Hurley became catatonic for two months. His mother, Carmen, institutionalized him at Santa Rosa to get him help.
However, Hurley is not ready to talk about the incident with his doctor. Hurley's reluctance comes from advice from another patient at the hospital, Dave. Dave doesn't want Hurley to change, and he encourages Hurley to eat more, not take his medication and try to escape. However, Dr. Brooks takes a picture of Hurley with his buddy Dave, and later shows it to Hurley. There's no one there: Dave is Hurley's imaginary friend.
Armed with this revelation, Hurley refuses to leave the institution when presented an opportunity by Dave, and chooses to stay and receive help.
At the end of the episode, we see from another point of view that Dave is indeed not with Hurley as Dr. Brooks takes the picture, and watching the entire scene is Libby, another patient at Santa Rosa...
