Young Hurley pulls out his father's tools to prepare for the two of them working on a Camero together--it needs a new carburetor. When his father comes outside, he hands Hurley the key to the Camero, and urges him to try turning the key, to maintain hope, to make his own luck. However, the car doesn't start. David Reyes then explains to young Hurley hat he has to go to Las Vegas for a little while, and their trip to the Grand Canyon will have to wait. He hands the little guy a candy bar, and then hops on his motorcycle and drives off.

We next see Hurley after his lotto win re-opening the Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack where he used to work. Hurley is interview by Tricia Tanaka, a television reporter, who grows irritated when Hurley begins detailing all the bad things that happened to him after winning the lottery. Tricia enters Mr. Clucks to get some interior shots, and as Hurley grills Randy (now employee, former boss) about all the possible things that could go wrong inside the restaurant, a meteorite destroys the building.

Hurley returns home, covered in dust and determined to go to Australia to learn the truth about the numbers and their curse. His mother discourages him from doing so, by revealing that his father has returned home after 17 years. Hurley is less than happy about this reunion, and suspects that his father is merely there for the money. Hurley's mother explains that she brought David back, to help dissuade Hurley that the numbers are cursed.

Indeed, David and Hurley visit a psychic, Lynn Karnoff who does appear to know a great deal about Hurley and the cursed numbers. When she suggests that Hurley be exorcised to free himself of the curse, Hurley accuses his father of having paid her to fool him. In fact, he had.

Furious, Hurley packs his bags to go to Australia. David tries to convince Hurley that going to Australia won't change anything: he has to make his own luck. David then explains that he did, in fact, return for the money, but that he believes now that Hurley should give it all away. Hurley should keep only enough to buy a new carburetor for the Camero, and the two of them can fix the car and then drive to the Grand Canyon, like they had planned so long ago. But Hurley turns his back on his father and leaves for Australia.
