    CAST:

Our first flash forward. The events take place in April, 2007.  Jack is on an airplane returning to Los Angeles, when a stewardess offers him a newspaper. Scanning the paper, Jack notices an item that distresses him. Later, as he's driving, he pulls over and leaves a voice message for someone, but then loses hope. He exits his car, climbs up onto the railing of a bridge and is about to throw himself off of it, when there is a terrible crash behind him. Jack apparently rescues a mother and child from the wreckage, and is touted as a hero. However, Jack is anything but the model of a hero. Jack is addicted to prescription painkillers, and his career is in shambles.

Jack goes to a funeral home, and finds it empty but for a simple coffin. The funeral director explains that there was no funeral, merely a viewing, and no one but Jack showed up. Jack downs his last pill, and heads to a pharmacy where they refuse to give him a refill. So Jack heads back to the hospital to steal from the medicine cabinet. While there, he's confronted by Dr. Hamil, the new chief of staff who tells Jack that the woman who he saved from the car crash has an interesting version of the events that led to her accident. She was distracted at the sight of a man standing on the rail of a bridge, and she hit the median, only to be slammed into from behind by a van. Jack, not liking the implications that he was to blame for the accident, rails against Dr. Hamil, and demands that they bring his father down.

Later, Jack alone in his filthy apartment, calls someone who picks up and agrees to see him. They meet at an airport, near the landing strip, and the mystery person is Kate. She notes that she saw him on television, pulling people out of burning wreckage, again, and adds that he looks terrible. She then asks why he called, and he pulls out the obituary to show her. He was hoping that she'd heard, that she'd go to the funeral, and Kate seems angry with this. Why would she go to the funeral, she asks and Jack gives an understanding nod. Jack's been flying a lot on his Golden Pass. Every Friday night he flies from L.A. to someplace in the Pacific, has a drink in the local airport and then gets on the plane home, hoping, praying the entire time that the plane will crash because he wants to go back. This is not going to change anything, asserts Kate. But Jack's sick of lying! They made a mistake! Kate, troubled by Jack's statement, backs away, saying that "he's" going to be wondering where she is, but Jack persists: they weren't supposed to leave. We have to go back, Kate! We have to go back! And go back Kate does, in fast reverse away from Jack.
