FLASHBACK SUMMARY:
A dark-haired Claire wakes up in the aftermath of a terrible car accident, and immediately notices that her passenger seems to have been ejected from the car. Not only that, but the passenger is her mother, Carole. Later at the hospital, Claire learns that her mother is in a coma, and may never wake up. Claire's aunt Lindsey clearly blames Claire. Claire and Lindsey also learn that all of Carole's expenses have been taken care of by an anonymous donor.
Claire returns to visit her mother in the hospital and finds Christian Shepherd in her mother's room. Christian attempts to leave, but Lindsey arrives and when the two begin to argue, Christian reveals to Claire that he is her father.
Christian seeks Claire out at her place of work: a tattoo
parlor. He swears that if she'll just have coffee with him, he'll leave
her life forever. Christian explains that he and Claire's mother had an
affair in Los Angeles. He attempted to be in Claire's life: he brought
her toys, sang to her, so on, but because Lindsey hated him, and he had
another family, he couldn't be with Carole. Christian goes on to
encourage Claire to allow her mother to die, rather than keep her on
life support, adding that there's a difference between hope and guilt,
and he's well acquainted. Claire, horrified, leaves, and tells
Christian that she doesn't want to ever know his name.
A
blonde, pregnant Claire returns to visit her mother in the hospital,
and confesses that she is pregnant. She also tells her mother that she
will be giving the child up for adoption. She tells her mother that she
has gained a new found respect for what her mother went through raising
her alone, and hopes that her mother can forgive her for being so awful
to her on the day of the crash.
