Kate returns to Iowa, where her car breaks down, stranding her for three days. At the gas station, she encounters Cassidy, who is trying to pull Sawyer's necklace con on the locals. Kate bails her out, and in exchange, Cassidy agrees to help Kate try to speak to her mother. It seems Kate is in Iowa because she needs to know why her mother turned her in following Wayne's death. Cassidy goes to Diane's home, dressed as Kate to test whether the cops are watching her, and sure enough, Ed Mars and his men tackle Cassidy, and take her in for questioning. Later, Cassidy goes to Diane's diner where she spills her bowl of chili onto Diane, forcing her to go to the bathroom to clean up. There, Kate confronts her mother who tells Kate that she loved Wayne, and she is not sorry for turning Kate in. Kate, in turn, is not sorry for killing Wayne. Diane tells Kate that she won't tell the cops that Kate's in the diner this time, but she will scream the next time she sees her. Cassidy returns Kate to the garage, where she tells Kate that she's pregnant, and Kate tells Cassidy her real name.
