Locke picks up a young hitchhiker, who tells Locke that he is on his way to Eureka to cut trees. Apparently, Eddie, the hitchhiker, has been having trouble with his father back home and has decided to leave. As they drive, Locke is pulled over by a sheriff, who reveals that Locke has a large load of guns in the back of his truck. But Locke is fully licensed, and Eddie gains Locke's trust when he helps lie for him.

Locke brings Eddie to the commune that he apparently has been living on since Helen left him. He points out their sweat lodge, wherein one goes to meditate and determine their life path: whether they are a hunter or a farmer. Eddie is introduced to the "family," and decides to stay.

After having lived on the commune for six weeks, Eddie suggests to Locke that he should be let in on what is being grown in the heavily guarded greenhouse: he believes the commune has some sort of bomb plot brewing (based on all the fertilizer that is going inside). Locke, relieved, assures Eddie that he'll talk to Mike and Jan, the leaders of the commune on Eddie's behalf.

Entering the greenhouse, which is full of marijuana, Locke finds Mike and Jan in a state of panic. Turns out Eddie is a undercover cop, and they need to get out of Dodge. Locke promises to "fix it." He takes Eddie out hunting, and when Eddie's back is turned, he lifts his rifle to shoot. But he can't pull the trigger--as Eddie points out--Locke isn't a hunter. And Eddie runs away.
