FLASHBACK SUMMARY:
A young Jack defends his best friend Mark Silverman on the playground from bullies. But by stepping in, he makes himself a target. Later, he is chastised by his father for trying to be a hero: "I had a boy on my table today. I don't know, maybe a year younger than you. He had a bad heart. It got real hairy, real fast. Everybody's looking at your old man to make decisions. And I was able to make those decisions because at the end of the day, after the boy died, I was able to wash my hands and come home to dinner. You know, watch a little Carol Burnett, laugh till my sides hurt. And how can I do that, hmm? And even when I fail, how do I do that, Jack? Because I have what it takes. Don't choose, Jack, don't decide. You don't want to be a hero, you don't try and save everyone because when you fail. . . you just don't have what it takes."
As an adult, Jack is called home by his mother. His father has gone missing, and she asks that Jack go bring him back. Jack balks--his father hasn't spoken to him in 2 months. But, he asks, "where is he?" And Margo's answer: "Australia."
Jack is next seen in Christian's Australian hotel room, inspecting the premises. The hotel manager informs Jack that his father has not ben in the room for three days. He adds that Christian has not rented a car, due to his "condition," and explains to Jack that there had been an "incident" involving Christian at the hotel bar. The manager then suggests that Jack speak to the police.
Jack is in the Medical Examiner's office. The ME explains that his father's body was found in King's Cross: "Now, a tox screen showed a blood alcohol content, which for a man of his size, probably brought on myocardial infarction - a sizable, and fatal heat-attack." The examiner unzips the body bag, and Jack identifies the bosy as being his father's.
Finally, Jack is seen at the ticket counter of Oceanic Airlines, begging the ticketing agent to allow him and his father's body onto the plane. He pleads that he must be on this particular flight, even though he does not have the proper documentation, because he needs to bury his father. He needs it to be over.
