This flashback takes us to a pregnant Susan and Michael in a baby store looking for a crib. Michael suggests that they name the baby Walt after Michael's father. They are not married, nor does it sound like she wants to marry Michael. Michael and Susan discuss who should be responsible for Walt. Susan wants to go take a job in Amersterdam and take Walt with her. Michael protests but she has already taken the job and she can provide better for Walt than he can (he hasn't worked in months). Almost 2 years later he calls her wanting to come see Walt. She says it's not a good idea. You can hear Brian talking in the background. Michael is furious and as he tells Susan he is coming to Amsterdam. He slams the phone down and steps around from the booth onto the street and his immediately hit by a passing car. (This car bears a remarkable resemblance to the one that hits Locke in California in DEUS EX MACHINA.)
Michael is recovering in a hospital and Susan comes to visit. She tells him she will pay all his bills. She also drops the bomb that she and Brian are getting married and that Brian wants to adopt Walt.
Eight years later, Brian and Susan are discussing work while Walt is on the floor looking at a picture book of Australian birds. Susan and Brian are not paying Walt much attention and it starts to annoyed. He tries to get their attention by talking louder and louder, until a bird hits the glass door outside and dies. Brian and Walt walk to the door and Walt asks if it is dead. Brian gives Walt a strange look and says yes. At this point Susan starts looking very ill.
Michael arrives in Australia, and is greeted by Walt's nanny who gives Michael a box of letters that he had written to Walt. She tells Michael that she thought Walt should have them. Michel then meets and explains to Walt that he is his biological father, telling him that Walt is going to come live with him now. He additionally tells Walt that Brian said that he could take Vincent.
