The episode begins with Locke awakening after the Swan Hatch implosion. He is alive, lying in the jungle and as Desmond runs past him, he realizes he's lost his voice. As he stands he is hit on the head with Eko's "Jesus Stick," which has the message "Lift up your eyes, and go North" carved into it. Locke marches into the beach camp and begins to build a sweat lodge, because, as he explains to Charlie, he needs to talk to the Island. Charlie stands guard for him as he engages in his vision quest. Boone acts as his guide,and explains that Locke must "clean up" his own mess before he can save anyone else. Emerging form the sweat lodge, Locke understands that he must save Eko from the polar bear. He and Charlie journey to the polar bear's cave, rescue Eko, and bring him back to the camp wherein Locke assumes a leadership role (and makes a speech that Desmond eerily predicts earlier to Hurley).
In Locke's flashback, he is living on a commune following his break-up with Helen. Locke picks up a young hitchhiker and brings him to the commune. After a few weeks, the hitchhiker, Eddie, asks to be let in on the commune's secrets--specifically, what the group is growing in their greenhouse. When Locke goes to speak to the commune leaders about this, he finds that they are destroying evidence that they've been growing marijuana, because Eddie is a cop. Locke promises to fix the problem, and takes Eddie hunting. But when Locke has the opportunity to kill Eddie, he can't bring himself to go through with it.
