Transcript
In his pre-island life, Sawyer was a conman. He is nearly successful with a Romance Scam, wherein he convinces a married couple to hand over a fortune for a great investment opporunity which doesn't exist. Sawyer has a couple on the hook but at the last minute, he balks when he sees the couple's child.
On the island, Sawyer is accused of hoarding Shannon's asthma inhalers, and Sayid and Jack torture him for information. Sawyer finally offers the inhalers in exchange for a kiss from Kate. Once he gets the kiss, though, he reveals he never had the inhalers. Kate later realizes that the letter that Sawyer keeps with him was written by Sawyer as a child, not to Sawyer by one of his victims.
