    Sweet Dreams

Season 1 - Walkabout / White Rabbit

Jack's Daddy Hallucination

In Walkabout, Jack is talking to Rose on the beach about her husband, and Rose conveys that she believes he is not dead...At this time, Jack sees a man in a dark suit standing at the edge of the beach a little distance away. This man starts to walk away into the bushes and Jack gets up to follow...he looks familar?
He loses sight of the man and returns to the beach. He sees him again that day in the bushes as he is talking to Kate and starts to follow him when he turns and goes deeper into the brush. He thinks he is following the man when he hears rustling in the bushes but as the person emerges - it is Locke.

In White Rabbit, Kate tells him he is suffering from lack of sleep and exhaustion but when he sees his father again he takes off into the jungle after him only to find himself falling off a cliff. Just as he starts to lose his grasp on a tree root, Locke reaches down and pulls him back to safety.

When Jack asks Locke how the other survivors are doing, Locke tells him that they are waiting for someone to tell them what to do. Jack tells him he is not a leader, afraid he doesn't have what it takes. This is something his father taught him as a child, that he can't save everyone because he is going to fail and Jack doesn't have what it takes to accept failure. This is shown in a flashback after Jack helps a childhood friend, Mark Silverman in a fight with bullies and Jack ends up getting beat up himself.

Locke questions Jack about why he is in the jungle. Jack tells him that he is chasing something which Locke calls the White Rabbit, like in
Alice in Wonderland. Jack, being a doctor, tells him it's just a result of dehydration and lack of sleep, but Locke explains that the island is special and everything that happened may have happened for a reason. Locke tells him that he has looked into the eye of the island and what he saw was beautiful. (Note: This is our first indication of the Man of Science (Jack) vs the Man of Faith (Locke) theme.)

When Jack offers to go with Locke to find water, Locke tells him to finish what he started so he can be the leader everyone expects him to be. Jack finds himself alone at night in the jungle and hears a familiar sound of ice clinking in a glass, turns and sees his father once again. After running after him, he discovers a fresh source of water. The area had plane wreckage strewn about and Jack reaches down to pull out a creepy doll from the water. He then spots a coffin and opens it only to find it empty. We are assuming that this was Christian's coffin, but then again, it may not have been.
