Daddy
Issues: Walt & Michael
Michael:
Michael respected his father enough
that he named Walt after his dad. He was unable to fulfill his own paternal
obligations when Walt's mother Susan left the country with the baby. He
unsucessfully tried to maintain contact with his son. After an absence of 9
years, he is having difficulty establishing a bond with Walt. Hurley makes note
of it to Jack that Michael "hates it.. Being a dad". Also, Locke claims that
Walt has formed an attachment to him because Michael treats him like a child and
he treats Walt as an adult. (SPEC)
With Walt now kidnapped, it will be
interesting to see how Michael deals with it. It will prove to be an ordeal for
him as he has been so over-protective of Walt. Since he's never had the
day-to-day worries of raising a child, it seems normal that he would feel so
over-protective of Walt.
Walt:
At first he is drawn to Locke, who struck up a conversation with Walt about
his mother and her death. He looks up to Locke and in Walt's eyes he pays more
attention to him than Michael. (WALK)
He never knew his biological dad
Michael and grew up thinking Michael never tried to contact him. He was unwanted
by his step-father, who appeared afraid of him. After Walt's mother died, Brian
went to Michael and expressed this feeling to him, telling Michael "I can't be
his father.."

BRIAN: "There's just...there's
something about him.
MICHAEL: "What the hell are you talking about, man?"
BRIAN: "Sometimes when he's around things happen. He's different somehow."

Adoption issues: Walt
Walt was
adopted by Brian Porter, his mother's husband. Michael did not want to give up
custody, and we learn that Brian never really wanted to adopt Walt.

BRIAN: "That I...I didn't want to be
a father. I just don't know how."
MICHAEL: "Hey, what the hell are you
talking about man. You adopted him."
BRIAN: "Yes, yes, yeah, because she
wanted that, and I wanted her.

Walt does not know how Brian really felt about him.
He still harbors a fondness for his adoptive father.
