Daddy
Issues: John Locke
When Locke first spoke of his
father, he told Walt that he "wasn't cool."
Later, we find out that
Locke's father is rather like a conman. He paid Emily to trick Locke into
seeking him out, laying a trap to get him to donate his kidney. (One would think
he just coulda asked). Daddy then abandoned Locke again. We might presume that
Cooper could have found Locke at any point in time during his childhood.
You can almost see where Locke learned how to court people to earn their
trust. His daddy did the same thing to him, dangling the fatherly image in front
of Locke, only to pull it away at the end.

Anthony calls Locke "Son" during thehunting trip. Locke calls Boone "Son" right before they find the plane. AfterLocke and Boone were both called "Son", something bad happened. Anthony betrayedLocke by only using him to get a new kidney. Boone was extremely injured doingsomething for Locke, and Locke runs off when Jack starts asking questions. Locke is devastated when Cooper (his father) tells him he's not
wanted.
Locke sits out front of Anthony's house.
Cooper gets into his car. He tells Locke that it's getting annoying
having him parked outside his house all the time and wants to know what it is
that Locke wants. All Locke wants to know is "why," why he conned him into
giving up his kidney only to have him walk out of his life once again. Transcript
Locke clearly feels that Cooper only used him for his kidney, and
never appreciated Locke for his true value. Locke recounts a story to
Boone that is ostensibly about why they haven't made any progress towards
entering the hatch, but is also about a son being misunderstood and
unappreaciated by his father:

LOCKE: Ludovico Buonarrati,Michelangelo's father. He was a wealthy man. He had no understanding of thedivinity in his son so he beat him. No child of his was going to use his handsfor a living. So, Michelangelo learned not to use his hands. Years later avisiting price came into Michelangelo's studio and found the master staring at asingle 18 foot block of marble. Then he knew that the rumors were true - thatMichelangelo had come in everyday for the last 4 four months, stared at themarble, and gone home for his supper. So the prince asked the obvious: what areyou doing? And Michelangelo turned around and looked at him, and whispered, stolavorando, I'm working. Three years later that block of marble was the statue ofDavid.

Later, Locke learns that his father died. Deciding to finally put his past behind him, he and Helen attend the funeral. However, as it turns out, Cooper has faked his own death, as a means to allude some men he had conned. He approaches Locke, asking for his help. If Locke will retreive a security deposit box for him, Cooper will give him $100,000 in return. Unable to resist, Locke retrieves the box, only to lost Helen.
Locke continues to look for a family, going so far as to join a commune. Additionally, he seeks to have a father/son relationship with someone. Unfortunately, when he reaches out to a young man who claims to have his own daddy issues, Locke is ultimately betrayed yet again.
Locke is confronted by a young man, Peter Talbot, with questions about Locke's father. It seems Anthony Cooper is conning Peter's mother, and going by the name Adam Seward. INstead of helping the young man, Locke claims to ot know Anthony at all. Locke, in turn, confronts Anthony about the con and makes Antony promise to end the engagment to Peter's mother. Anthony agrees, but soon after Peter turns up dead.
Locke, furious, and certain that his father killed the young man, confronts his father at his apartment. Anthony swears that he didn't kill Peter, and that Mrs. Talbot ended he wedding plans in her grief. When Locke is skeptical and threatens to call Mrs. Talbot, Anthony knocks Locke out an 8th floor window, breaking Locke's back and paralyzing him.
On the island, Cooper reappears, being held by the Others.

Mommy Issues: John Locke
Locke's mommy is a bonafide nutcase. The P.I. confirmed that she is
schizophrenic, and we saw her form for multiple admissions to the Santa Rosa
Mental Health Institute. She sought John out, telling him that he's special and
part of a design, that their meeting is a sign of great things to come. Little
did John know at that time, that his part in the "design" was to be the pawn in
the scheme to get John to donate his kidney to his father. - Deus Ex Machina

Adoption / Foster Care Issues: John
Locke
We found out that Locke's mother decided to
put him up for adoption and told his father she was not going to have the
baby....if what Mr. Cooper said was true. Locke was raised in several foster
homes.
Locke tells the story of how his foster sister Jeanie fell from
the monkey bars, broke her neck and died when she was 6 years old. His
foster-mother was despondent and wouldn't leave her room for weeks. A golden
retriever walked into their house 6 months later, his foster mom believed it was
her daughter reincarnated. The lived happily until mom died 5 years later, the
dog disappeared the same day. - Outlaws

Relationship Problems: John
Locke
Locke's live-in girlfriend Helen, is fed up with John constantly hanging out
by Cooper's house hoping for a reconciliation. She tracks him down
there and makes him choose between her or Cooper. John is hesitant but Helen
convinces him that it's a leap of faith that he must take. He finally gives in
to her and seems to try to put it out of his mind. - Orientation
But the past
comes back to haunt him once again when Cooper cons him into helping him get his
money out of the bank after faking his death to get a couple of goons off his
back. Locke meets him at an airport hotel to give him the money, but Helen
shows up totally PO'd that he helped him once again and behind her back as well. Locke asks her to marry him, but Helen made her choice leaving Locke once again
alone. - Lockdown
After Locke is left by Helen, he continues to seek out the family he never had. He joins a commune, and is welcomed by Jan and Mike who consider Locke a very "special" guy. Later, Locke picks up a young hitchhiker who claims to be running away from an abusive father. Locke, moved by this young man who is clearly looking for a father figure, brings Eddie to the commune. Little does Locke know, but Eddie is an undercover cop who used Locke to infiltrate the commune. It seems that the authorities had created a psychological file on Locke, and knew that his Achille's heel is his need for a family. In trying to help Eddie find a new family, he destroyed his commune family. - Further Instructions
