            Family Issues: Kate

Kate finds out her mother is in the hospital and makes arrangements with her childhood sweetheart, Tom, to go see her on the sly, since obviously Kate is on the run. But before they go to the hospital, they go to a field and dig up a lunch box filled with memorabilia. Inside this time capsule, there is a tape of them from 1989 where we hear a brief conversation and get a glimpse of Kate's desire to run:

          Quote:

YOUNG TOM: "Because we'll be married and you'll be a mom and we'll have 9 kids."
YOUNG KATE: "I don't think so. As soon as I get my license we should just get in a car and drive. You know, run away."
YOUNG TOM: "You always want to run away, Kate."
YOUNG KATE: "Yeah, and you know why."

Excerpt from Born To Run, written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz

Could there be something about her family at this young of an age that she feels the need to run already?

Once they get to the hospital, Kate goes in to see her mother. With her mother sleeping, Kate cries, and tries to talk to her. She apologizes "for everything I have put you through". Her mother, Diane, starts calling for help, getting visibly upset and scared by Kate's presence.

We also don't know what happened to Kate's father as yet. She's only mentioned that he was in the Army (Ranger Battallion) and he used to take her into the woods tracking deer when she lived in Fort Lewis, Washington. She seemed to speak fondly of the memory. We don't know if this was before or after she and Tom made the tape in 1989. -All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

In What Kate Did, we learn that Sam Austen is not her real father. Kate was conceived while he was in Korea on active duty. When he returned, Kate's mother was with Kate's supposed step-father (but actually her biological father), Wayne. Sam wanted to take her with him when he left Kate's mom but Diane wouldn't let her go.

Kate's biological father is Wayne, a slime ball. He hits Diane and seems a bit too attracted to Kate, but she says he never touched her (the implication is sure strong though).

One night when Wayne comes home drunk, Kate helps him into his bed. When she leaves on her motorcycle, the entire house goes up in flames. Kate tells her mother that she has set up a life insurance policy for her in Wayne's name, and she begins her life on the run. When Ed Mars catches up with her at the bus station, he informs her that her mother turned her in.

Kate returns to Iowa, wanting, needing to know why her mother turned her in. With Cassidy's help, Kate evades the federal agents that surround Diane, And Kate manages to have a talk with her mother. Her mother reveals that even though Wayne abused her, she loved him, and she can't forgive Kate for killing him. Diane offers that she'll let Kate go this time, but that the next time she sees Kate, she will scream.

            Marriage Issues:

In Outlaws, Kate admits to Sawyer that she was once married but it didn't last long.  In fact, the marriage lasted six months. Kate was very much in love with a young police officer, Kevin Callis, in Florida. However, their relationship blossomed while she was on the run for killing Wayne. As such, Kevin believed that her name was Monica. The two married in a church ceremony, and Kate attempted to be the good housewife. She was very happy in the relationship until a pregnancy scare (it was negative) made her realize that she couldn't stay with Kevin for his own safety. Kate drugged her husband, confessed everything to him before he collapsed, and left him to return to her life on the run.
