Juliet appears to be very close to her ailing sister, Rachael. So close, in fact, that she is willing to risk her career to help her sister become pregnant.
Once Juliet arrives on the island, Ben tells her that her sister's cancer has returned. But he can cure her, if Juliet agrees to stay on the island with him, and continue her work. Juliet agrees, but later learns that Ben, himself, has cancer. Juliet is furious and disillusioned and calls Ben a liar. To prove that he is not, Ben shows her video of her sister, alive and well, playing with her nephew who was named for Juliet.

Juliet is divorced from her husband, Edmund Burke. However, the relationship is complicated by the fact that she works for him. When approached by Mittelos Bioscience with a job offer, Juliet turns them down because of Edmund:
And, unfortunately for Edmund, on the day that Juliet tells him that her research has been successful, and her sister is pregnant, he is hit and killed by a bus.
