Mommy Issues: Hurley and Carmen
Carmen badgers Hurley about his weight, concerned that he will never live a normal life, and find a girlfriend. Carmen also discourages Hurley from his notion that the numbers are cursed, in part because of her religious beliefs. Hurley is close to his mother, having been raised by her alone for most of his life, and he is on Flight 815 because he was determined to not miss her birthday.
David Reyes left the family when Hurley was a young boy, claiming that he has to go to Las Vegas for a while. (He also, significantly, gave Hurley a candy bar moments before he left, to make the little guy feel better--could this be the cause of Hurley's issues with food?) He returns 17 years later, when Carmen contacts him, looking for his assistance in dissuading Hurley of the notion that he is cursed. Hurley is immediately suspicious of his father's motives, and still wounded by his father's abandonment. David admits to Hurley that he came back originally for the money, but then encourages him to give all the money away, so as to rid himself of the supposed "curse." But Hurley refuses, and chooses to go to Australia to learn what he can about the numbers, rather than stay with his father. Hurley abandons the father who abandoned him.
