Charlie was the bass player for the band DriveShaft, a group he started
with his brother Liam in Manchester, England. The group achieved some
level of fame, but broke up at the height of their popularity. During
his tenure with Driveshaft, Charlie became addicted to heroin.
Sometime later, Charlie flew to Australia in a failed attempt to
convince Liam to reunite the band. Presumably, he got on the doomed
flight 815 soon after this conversation.
TV Guide October 24-30
notes that J.J. Abrams got the inspiration for the song from "a
nonsensical rant uttered by a female member of the audience of (Maury)
Povich's tabloid talk show."
It's also been speculated that the group Driveshaft mirrors the
real-life group of Oasis, which coincidentally is also from Manchester,
England. The group Oasis also had two brothers as members, one
ironically named Liam, who is now the only original member left in the
group today. See the Wikipedia entry for Oasis.
The song was recorded by artist Jude. Listen to a soundbite here.
